Political truths that are worth sharing but aren’t funny

I know you’ve used the acronym a lot for a long time, but I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to see that without interpreting it as Starbucks and being confused for a few moments…

Ugh, got that right… we are now in year three of attempting to get divorced.

Hopefully I can drop the “STB” soon.

You know, I don’t think there’s a law against dropping it sooner…

Heh, true.

But the technicality, the “well, actually,” the nit to pick…
“XBNX”

Hopefully you won’t bump into your STBX at SBUX before then.

To be fair there are something on the order of 15x more abortions than firearm deaths in the United States each year.

And if we’re looking at only children then obviously a MUCH higher multiplier.

Ahead of the second anniversary of the January 6 attack on the Capitol, Mother Jones video journalist Garrison Hayes teamed up with contributing essayist Anthony Conwright to examine the overlooked motivations of the mob. While much of the nation’s attention has been consumed by Trump’s “Big Lie”, Conwright argues that there is a familiar—and very American—motive being minimized in the reckoning: racial resentment. Tracing this white grievance to the post-Civil War period, Conwright hears a distinct historical echo in how white paramilitary groups used violence and intimidation, often with the help of pro-slavery Democrats, to steal elections and maintain power after the abolition of slavery.

I feel like that motive has been on full display.

We have open discussion of draconian crackdowns like JD Vance saying he doesn’t care whether the Springfield migrants are here legally, he’d deport them, and promises of the largest deportation operation in history with concentration camps.

We have GOP politicians openly Tweeting the Great Replacement Theory and when called out, not apologizing, but saying that there’s nothing wrong with “just sharing statistics.”

We have the disparate treatment of BLM protestors & rioters and the January 6th insurrectionists.

We have the common attack angle on Harris of “she’s Black!”

I could go on.

I’d argue that the largest motive behind MAGA is racial resentment, and that is fueled by playing on economic insecurity and disingenuously redirecting that anger at minorities. I’ve never considered it to be minimized or hidden since Trump came onto the scene with “They’re rapists, they’re criminals, and some, I assume, are good people,” and MAGA happily swallowed the pill for which Fox had primed them.

Prior to Trump, the racial resentment was said less loudly.

My favorite quote from that video at 6:02. “If History is to teach us anything is that America remains menaced by our collective lack of honest self reflection.”

MAGA aren’t poor or economically insecure. But I guess Trump has been especially good at attracting white men who make less than 50k. And while I agree that they are probably quite racist, your immigration system is simply a disaster that is both cruel and exploitative. There are no good guys here, both parties have done nothing to fix the system. If you want poor immigrants working in your chicken factories and farms, allow them to come into the country safely. I read a comment on here saying something along the lines “well they traveled all this way to get here so they have already proven themselves worthy”. That’s sick.

The Democrats has a bill with strong bipartisan support that the Republicans killed at Trump’s request. It wouldn’t have fixed everything, but it would have been a good start.

Moreover, bipartisan Senate deals on immigration and border security were reached during the last 3 administrations, and the Republicans backed out of all 3.

Wait. That’s a “too be fair”?

To be fair, “to be fair” is a really common phrase.

I would say it’s fairly common not really common.

If Trump wins, it’s unlikely that Kamala will claim the election was stolen. :man_shrugging:

Assuming the election is close, it really is tough to say which outcome is worse for democracy. Trump successfully getting to a friendly SCOTUS seems like a possible disaster that can only be topped by an actual successful January 6.

But Trump is old and probably won’t be terribly effective in doing anything if he wins. There is the real threat of a post Trump world that could work against anyone that pushes an autocratic agenda forward that will fall flat the second he is out.
