Political truths that are worth sharing but aren’t funny

Suppose my SAT verbal score was less than ___ . Or, that I never took the SAT because I couldn’t imagine subjecting myself to four more years of sitting in classrooms when I could be doing stuff.

I expect that nuance goes right past me. “No human is illegal” looks like some pointy-headed do-gooders just twisting themselves into pretzels trying to justify no immigration laws.

I don’t know anyone seriously advocating for no immigration laws.

The point I see of those signs is to emphasize those seen as others are fellow humans. :person_shrugging:

I’ve seen it, but even among the far-left, open borders is a fringe position. It’s pretty much the same people who believe “there shouldn’t be countries, we should all live in harmony.”

The point is that the humans aren’t illegal, and calling them illegals is dehumanizing. They’re illegal or undocumented migrants. They aren’t illegal people. They are people doing something illegal.

It is. Everyone “others” and it is very powerful.

My point is simply that not every white woman trump voter can be playing the othering game. A huge number, probably most, have been groped themselves, and have loved ones that have been raped.

One simple, albeit incomplete, explanation is simply perceived age. They’re both old geezers but Biden shows it meaningfully more than Trump. People don’t want an old-seeming president. Hopefully Biden can fight that perception in the first debate.

Honestly I do think there’s a large age difference.

And on the debate stage it will be worse because nobody is expecting Trump to sound coherent. Just loud.

Sometimes you’ve got to come across loud and assertive. People want to see strength.

There is perceived age difference for sure.

Trump is a large guy with lets justsay a lot of meat on his bones and his orange dye job makes him look younger.

Biden is a small thin guy who looks frail with thinning white hair.

That is to say Trump looks like your fucked up drunk uncle and Biden looks like grandpa in a rocking chair.

Do you have a list of these things? I’m assuming these are the things that Fox news tells them to believe, but aren’t necessarily true.

Maybe they’ve been conditioned to think they’re responsible in part for it, asking for it in some way, like what they were wearing, if alcohol was involved, time/location, etc, and if they’re responsible somehow then they can protect themselves from it happening again. Or they buy into the boys will be boys and that’s the way life is. Or groping is a fair trade to save the unborn. I honestly don’t get it either.

It was sad to hear comments in the bear vs man discussions to the effect that with a bear, no one will ask what she was wearing or doing that caused the attack.

Teachers turning kids trans or gay, never mind that teachers would use such powers to get kids to come to class, put away their phones, shower and use deodorant, turn in homework, etc.

People seem to confuse loud and obnoxious with strong. Trump is the former, not the later. A president once said speak softly and carry a big stick, not speak loudly because you have a little …

The Democrats would love to raise taxes to expand the government (e.g. GND).

Again just assuming ignorance or racism is no better than the thinking of voters on the far right who presume far left voters all want communism despite how obviously unsuccessful it is.

Sure, it feels good to dismiss Trump as obnoxious. If you don’t viscerally disagree with everything he says (i.e. half the country) he comes across assertive and funny. Biden needs to act a bit more like Trump in this way, or lose the election.

I agree that is a perception and the usual talking point.

The last time Democrats did something remotely close to that, we spent months talking about death panels.

Or Defund the Police… the Democrats are often their worst enemy…

I agree that simple distorted taking points are effectively used against democrats all the time.

What should democrats do about that? Be more like Republicans is an obvious option, is that what we want?

Make more compelling arguments would be a fantastic start

I’m going about this the wrong way, thus a deleted post…

I do not dismiss the Republican voter as ignorant. I am greatly concerned about their ignorance due to the cause of their ignorance. A majority of them are ignorant. The positions they espouse are ignorant of the facts. It is not their fault. They are fed a steady stream of falsehoods and framing designed to keep them ignorant. The old school Republican political positions on issues are not necessarily ignorant, the current positions even when they are the same are.

For example, the amount of immigration the government should allow has a broad array of acceptable, reasonable levels. Arguments can be made for or against each position. Even the overly simplistic “They’ll take our jobs” is a yard sign level view of a complex legitimate argument on immigration’s effect on a worker’s personal economy. Reasonable arguments are not being made by Republicans, and pro Republican media. The pro Republican “arguments” are fanciful fear mongering at best outright racist bigotry at worst. The arguments seem designed to keep their own voters ignorant of the issues.

Note: I am not saying this lack of validity only resides on the Republican side, Democrat voters have a similar ignorance being fed to them. At this point it is just magnitudes smaller than what has captured the Republican party.
