Yep. Margaret Thatcher said similar about the Falklands in the 1980s, and she pointed out that the US was not willing to give up Hawaii (then a mere territory) during WWII.
It’s perfectly rational to want to keep your country in tact.
That said, I fear plenty of Americans would happily jettison certain pieces. Different pieces depending on who you ask of course.

Yep. I think plenty of Republicans would drop all the big cities on the Pacific and northern Atlantic coasts.
