Political truths that are worth sharing but aren’t funny

I think they tried this for a short while in the 90s and the laws are probably still on the books.

But illegal immigrants don’t contribute to reelection campaigns while corporations who want cheap labor are people who do.

I don’t remember anything special about the 1990s. The relevant law was the 1986 Immigration Reform Act. IMO, it was a “grand bargain” that traded amnesty for people already here for “getting tough” on employers. There are both civil and potential criminal penalties.

One problem with the law is that it requires that the employer “knowingly” hire an illegal worker. The applicant can put some fake information on an I-9 and the employer isn’t required to verify it. The other is that small businesses have a lot of political clout.

The internet tells me that the SSA started sending “no match” letters in 1993. They tell employers that there is something wrong with a SSN they submitted (often a mismatch with name). So purely fictitious numbers started getting flagged, but the letter specifies that employers should not take action solely because they got a letter. There is a history of starting and stopping those letters.

Your recollection is probably better than mine. I was drinking my way through college in the late 80s

I still think it’s worth picking your battles, but I suppose if you get too used to complying, there could be a boil-the-frog scenario.

I think most people can tell the difference between getting out of the car and getting into a cattle car, though. Although, if getting out of the car is a precursor to being sent to El Salvador prisons, I can see why someone wouldn’t comply.

Can’t imagine Poilievre ever saying anything as notable.

Canada would be a US territory by now if Poilievre got elected.

It occurred to me today that Trump would like to add a state that he can name after himself.

That’s accurate where I am. During COVID the deniers were flying Canadian flags in their vehicles. Now if someone is flying a Canadian flag, it immediately sets the tin, and it’s not about patriotism. no way am I flying a Canadian flag now.

not that I would’ve before either lol, but now if I did, it comes with judgement.

Someone didn’t like the speech.

*Trump said Canada should be grateful and that Prime Minister Mark Carney wasn’t grateful in his speech at Davos yesterday: “Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

I wish the leaders of other countries were not afraid to speak out like Carney. Too much grovelling.
