While this is largely a self-congratulating opinion piece by the former mayors of London and NY, air pollution in Paris is also way down and the underlying point is valid.
Clean air is a real accomplishment in both the US and in Europe - look back at pictures of smog from the 70s and 80s and realize we have many more cars now and skies are blue.
Air in Asia is disgusting. Smog can swirl around there the same way that clouds in the upper elevations of mountain ranges swirl. I am sure a large part of all of this is simply moving industrial manufacturing away from NA and Europe and into Asia and other emerging economies.
The reason for singling out London, Paris, and New York, however, is that in the urban cores, all three cities have actually gotten a measurable proportion of their cars off of the roads.
That’s on top of manufacturing moving, and (in the US at least, not sure about Europe) retirement of coal-fueled electricity generation in favor of natural gas and renewables.
I didn’t realize that the Presidential motorcade drove through the reflecting pool after it was painted but before being filled. I’m not a paint expert, but that doesn’t strike me as a good idea.

Probably. Of course, driving alongside the pool would be too much to consider.
