I feel very bad about french not being available outside of Canada. This is not what we wanted at all. Non-separatist francophones, like myself, have a very particular view of Quebec in Canada. I view Quebec as being fundamentally “Canadian” as in there is no Canada without Quebec. know your Canadian history. Quebec city was founded in 1608.
French is simply on the decline in Canada. If you think that multiculturalism is helping francophones in Canada, you are extremely delusional. It’s quite the opposite.
Btw, you will notice that most prominent politicians in Ottawa speak french. If people put in the effort, they can become fluent in french. But most Canadians do not care. And frankly it is getting worse and worse. Even in Montreal we are seeing a severe decline in Francophones. Many Francophones have left the city.
listen, Europe and Canada isn’t the United States. Believe it or not but yes people are proud of their culture. Like Canadians are proud of not being American. There is french culture, Italian culture, Quebec culture, etc. The fact that you think this is xenophobic is borderline insane.
For most Canadians, becoming fluent in French has negligible value. Once they’re fluent, there’s little use for it. There are far better uses of their time, like learning Spanish or Mandarin or pursuing other interests
Why?
Because some “culture” needs to be “preserved”? Because that “culture” is important"? Important to whom? Everyone? No, important just to a small number of folks.
I agree with most of what you said here. But you seem to disagree with the idea that wokeness is unrelated to immigration policy. I don’t really feel like going down that rabbit hole with you tbh as I am tired of culture war stuff. I’ll just say that our prime minister made the comment that wokeness makes Quebecois feel bad about defending our culture, and that is true.
I’ll post this just as an example:
Interesting theory. Ditching multiculturalism would likely kill off French outside of Quebec, New Brunswick and Ottawa. We’d have no need to maintain it.
Right… There’s been no influence from several decades of listening to and watching American movies, TV, and music. It’s all the fault of multiculturalism over the last few years. Get real.
The only way to realistically fight American consumer culture is by actively protecting a common culture. The defining characteristic of Toronto is multiculturalism, therefore it does not have any protection against American consumer culture. It will progressively become American. American culture is the culture that becomes the dominant culture in the absence of your own distinct common culture.
One important feature of a culture is deriding other cultures so one feels better, superior even, to them.
When a culture to deride doesn’t exist, make up a boogeyman.
