Today @elonmusk gave a wide ranging and candid interview at @dealbook 2023. He also offered an apology, an explanation and an explicit point of view about our position. X is enabling an information independence that’s uncomfortable for some people. We’re a platform that allows people to make their own decisions. And here’s my perspective when it comes to advertising: X is standing at a unique and amazing intersection of Free Speech and Main Street — and the X community is powerful and is here to welcome you. To our partners who believe in our meaningful work – Thank You.
In a way, the whole charade now is quite humorous.
We have Musk with a social media platform as his mouthpiece, making increasingly unhinged comments in between a few normal ones.
And we then have LY increasingly twisting herself into a veritable modern art-like pretzel trying to defuse the comments Musk made so that advertisers don’t flee.
Getting them to cancel Disney+/whatever it becomes would hurt a shit-ton more, as everything that has been bought is on the books. Then he can buy Disney and run it into the ground, too.
There is currently a move among some MAGA folks to boycott Walmart b/c they have stopped advertising. I don’t think that is going to gain much traction.
I’m still waiting for alleged mainstream media on the internet to stop treating people’s opinions (even if they are considered some kind of “expert” on the subject) expressed on Twixter as part of the news.
White changes depending on who people want to discriminate against. Used to be Italians were non-white.
(Interestingly when trying to find a % of Middle Eastern population in an area I learned that the census counts Middle Easterners as white too! Imagine the surprise of all those Islamophobes.)
My Twitter is full of people responding to the latest Dr. Who episode, in which a biracial actor (English mom, Indian dad) plays Isaac Newton in a light hearted bit in which he discovers “mavity”. Many people are not amused, and 1/3 of those who are angry about the casting are calling him black. No one seems offended by the fact that he is vastly better looking and more socially skilled than Newton.
