Agree with this. This is SOP for authoritarians.
Living in a quasi-police state will get you some people onside as well, leading to smaller demonstrations.
Narcissists are unable to buy taste (even when they have resources) primarily because they insist on doing things their own way (when they have no real experience). Any interior decorator worth their salt would have a heart attack when they saw that room.
Trump has always been super tacky with his gold trim obsession on everything.
You see some of this in ME (authoritarian) countries and old USSR satelitte countries like Kazakhstan (also authoritarian).
I suspect Trump got his obsession with gold trim from abroad when he was younger (80s and 90s).

NYT pulled an op-ed piece on, of all things, the media being intimidated by Trump. Said that they have to pick their battles.

Let’s not get All TDS, here. I’ll bet the NYT rejects most of the op Ed submissions. And “pick your battles” is a reasonable answer. Mr. C is free to write it, and the NYT is free to reject it.
It’s ironic in more than one dimension. First the obvious- it’s an op ed purported to be about intimidation. And secondly because we are all aware of the section 230 protections for the “publishers” on the internet to claim they are not responsible for user content. The NYT does not enjoy that protection.
Mad world.
I’ll give you that NYT rejects most submissions. And that they are free to reject this op ed. But would you have considered “pick your battles” to be a reasonable answer before this year? I know I wouldn’t have.
We know he said that they said that. That is all we know. I want documentation on this, else meh.
Also, why does he have to be in the NYT? Just publish it himself.

There’s actually historical precedent in what he said. Parts of the US used to have vagrancy laws which made it illegal to be unemployed.
Mostly used to keep black people in a state slavery even if they were nominally free.
