I agree with that. Trump goes faster and does damage even if courts eventually catch up.
But, my point is that I don’t know who the “somebody” is who will take Trump to court. Nvidia is the biggest market cap company in the world. They would rather pay the export tax than sue Trump. He has too many ways to hurt them.
That’s a possibility. But, maybe Nvidia management says that the shareholders made more money selling the chips with the export tax than they would have made not selling the chips at all.
Trump’s power to declare the exports a “national security risk”, … or not, depending on his mood, … makes it hard to argue normal economics.
This is the part he likes best. The money paid out is not his. This has nothing to do with his golf swing or his looks or his intellect.
Now, make it about one of those, and maybe there would be a temper tantrum.
I have voted for Republicans for statewide office multiple times, in multiple states, and felt that they did a good job after being elected. But the lack of condemnation of statements like that from today’s Republicans makes me think that the entire party needs to be voted out of office.
It’s crazy that the White House thinks that posting a video of 20 or so police officers making a late night raid arrest of someone for throwing a sandwich makes them look tough.
A man accused of throwing a Subway sandwich at a federal officer in D.C. was back in federal court on Thursday, facing a felony assault cahrge.
A judge released 37-year-old Sean Dunn — a former Department of Justice employee — on his own recognizance. Despite charging him with an enhanced version of an assault charge that requires bodily injury and carries up to eight years in federal prison, prosecutors said Thursday they had no basis on which to argue he should be detained.
According to his attorney Sabrina Shroff, Dunn first appeared in the D.C. Superior Court on Monday, but the case wasn’t papered. Two days later, prosecutors obtained a new arrest warrant — this time in federal court.
Shroff said said she tried repeatedly to contact the U.S. Attorney’s Office and even the D.C. Jail to arrange for Dunn to turn himself in, but was unable to reach anyone. She told Dunn to meet her Thursday morning at court, but later learned he was arrested shortly after 11 p.m. by federal law enforcement. The White House then posted a promotional video of Dunn’s arrest to its account on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday evening.
As I saw that for the first time, it took a while to realize that it was intentionally released by the White House.
The cartoonish authoritarianism made me think for a minute it was released bystander footage, and the black-and-white evil White House logo had me teetering, because… well… this administration does consistently use motifs and iconography widely known as “evil”, but that looked pretty damn “evil”, so I teetered.
Trump has no successor, he is old and in crappy shape. One fall on the golf course will be all it takes for everyone to realize he is a frail (near) octagenarian. He seems to be posting fewer crazy rants in the middle of the night, whether that’s because he is starting to fade, or his team has taken away his phone from him.
Trump’s popularity is more a result of the 25 year culture war campaign by Fox News and Rush Limbaugh than it is based on any real core belief. Maybe throw in a heavy dose of xenophobia that somehow Trump can speak to without it hurting him, mostly because he creates a never ending stream of nonsense to deal with.
This all dies as soon as Trump appears weak, and the clock is ticking on that. Biden towards the end 2023 was not raising alarms with his mental fitness and within 6 months was struggling. Trump will be hitting a similar point agewise shortly after the mid-terms. We could look back at that point and realize that Biden winning in 2020 was a very good thing as it was just enough to push Trump’s authoritarian grip out to an age where he no longer had the capacity to hold on. We would be completely screwed if January 6th happened this year rather than in 2020.
