Milestones Toward an Authoritarian Government

I honestly expected that to mean that Trump was going to run for mayor of NYC while President.

Perhaps that’s not legal, but that wouldn’t impact what I said.

I moved the gerrymandering discussion to a new thread. It’s possible I might have miscategorized a post or 2 while doing that, and if so feel free to gerrymander them to their rightful place.

I’m thinking Chinese citizens mostly, who know their government is liable to imprison them for not much of a good reason.

Amendment 1, too.

So we’ll spend money to create a new census with bogus numbers in order to add representatives to red states before the next election.

Republicans are entering their end game, IMO. This is a hostile political coup.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday said he has told the Commerce Department to create a new Census that excludes undocumented migrants,

Odd. I figured that Trump was planning to get rid of all the undocumented migrants long before 2030.

Maybe the real plan is to exclude legal immigrants, too.

We’ll be hearing again from “constitutional conservatives” why the Constitution can be ignored by Dear Leader because he is the chosen one.

I have recently seen self-designated “Constitutional Originalists” arguing that the President has the right to enslave every undocumented migrant, because they’re all criminals and the Constitution carves out slavery as an acceptable criminal punishment.

Well, if we were going to brand them as criminals, we’d have to be trying them in Article III courts, have public trials, potentially facilitate access to lawyers, etc…and that would arguably be better than the farce we’re perpetrating today.

As it is, legally we’re at best only recognizing them as tortfeasors.

Eh - the right has been laying the groundwork of calling this an invasion/an invading army for years. I don’t have all the details in front of me, but the admin has been testing the legal grounds of using wartime powers for domestic purposes. See LA as an obvious example. I wouldn’t be surprised to see people rounded up for being “gang members” and “part of a foreign terror organization”.

wouldn’t that be something the agencies can, or should do, anyway? perhaps with appointees, the definition of “national interest” would be different.

Seems much worse, if used

Small government, am I right?

The story was that exports were banned due to the national security risks. Now, it’s okay if the federal gov’t gets 15% of the revenue.

It’s like watching some guy play tennis against himself.
