First amendment says what?

This has been pretty standard behaviour when traveling to most countries in my government department for awhile. The US was on the trusted country list, but much of the EU wasn’t. Not sure if this has changed or will change soon.

At least he’s consistent?

For us (very large global multinational), the EU is “green” while the US has now been moved to “amber” status for data protection. Its now on par with Brazil and Hong Kong.

Harvard has published a copy of the letter of unreasonable demands that the administration just sent them. They have said that they will not comply.

Edit: Harvard response:

Trump appointed judge says that the White House has to let the AP back into the press pool. The administration ignores the order, ironically to cover an event in which there is discussion of how the administration is also ignoring a unanimous SCOTUS decision.

The report of the external party shall include information as to individual faculty
members who discriminated against Jewish or Israeli students or incited students

“Provide us lists of troublesome individuals who may be politically dangerous”

Harvard has the luxury of a $50+ billion endowment fund and many deep-pocketed alumni. Many other universities could not respond as strongly.

They also have a medical school that relies heavily on federal funding. Princeton is best off to fight (which they are already doing) because they have the deepest pockets of schools without med schools.

The Greenland-based U.S. military head simply said that Vance’s views did not necessarily represent the views of the military. Seems like a pretty mild disclaimer to me. The military folks based there still have to live there after Vance vents his spleen and leaves.

(Semi-paywalled, annoyingly)

Columbia has a $14bn endowoment which is why I find their behavior so despicable.

They have ample money to fight this as well.

We all know that Trump’s MO is now - see exhibit B with the law firms. He is trying to use the power of the state to intimidate and get his way.

If I was a Columbia alumnus, I would stop donating to them because of their acquiescence. Conversely, I would increase my givings if they had taken a principled stand against Trump. I would hope a lot of their alumni would feel that way.

As a Harvard alum, I don’t donate because they have a metric fuck ton of money and it feels like other, actual charities could use it more.

I appreciate your view.

Hypothetically, however, if you HAD been regularly donating to Harvard would you have stopped donations on principle if they had capitulated to Trump?

Yes. And my parents’ Alma Mater has, so my brother and I are encouraging them to cease donations and explain why

Canadian academics being warned against unnecessary travel to the US and being careful about their electronics. Seems kind of similar to the warnings people get when traveling to repressive regimes.
