Milestones Toward an Authoritarian Government

Just consider: what if the Dear Leader appointed himself to replace Powell?

The SSA is switching all official public communications to X/Twitter, as everyone knows that’s where octogenarians get their news

Australians are also being targeted now.

I think the US is too far gone now. No way you come back from this type of behavior.

The US border official sounds like a piece of work. Every time one of these stories surfaces, thousands more foreigners probably decide not to visit the US.

Welcome to Trump’s America. The ICE agent will probably be Employee of the Month for his behaviour.

Ironically, since tourists’ spending is effectively exports.

Without any investigation on my part I would guess the ICE agents are given a quota of some sort (hopefully it is not financial bonuses). ICE seems to have realized that actual illegal persons are hard to find as they are actively trying not to be found. Legal persons have a paper trail and are easy to find so they target those to keep the numbers up.

The US Is Turning a Blind Eye to Crypto Crimes | WIRED?

Of course they are. The ability for people to bribe Trump by buying his crypto is a feature of this admin, not a bug.

We’ve crossed 1,000 posts in this thread. I didn’t count how many individual “milestones” have been listed.

But, one stands out as my candidate for “worst news I’ve seen”

The headline is “Law Firms Pledge Nearly $1 billion in Free Work to Trump”.

The body lists 9 firms that have already “settled”. (But, of course, once Trump knows he can get away with this, nothing is really setttled.)

https://www.axios.com/2025/04/12/big-law-pro-bono-legal-work-trump

Immediately after the election we knew that Trump would have a Congress full of boot-lickers. They are a cheering section and gofors, not a separate branch of government.

We also knew that Trump would ignore laws and the constitution and just tell the courts “make me”. I expected some eventual Supreme Court ruling that Trump would openly defy. Then, maybe, voters might get worried about catching our democracy as Trump pushes it over the cliff.

But, courts don’t rule unless they have cases. And cases don’t appear by magic, they need lawyers. And Trump has scared the biggest firms into obedience (because he could hurt their partners’ incomes and money is more important than the rule of law to these very well paid lawyers).

And, of course, major universities are caving, and business leaders won’t fight (that’s why the law firms caved).

Trump has accomplished all this in just 82 days. Imagine what he will do in the next 1,379.

I suppose the Founders would have been surprised that we actually made this experiment kind of work for almost 250 years. But, I’m not happy seeing the end.

It’s disturbing to think that our Dear Leader might have need of at least $1B of legal work on his behalf, considering what’s in his not-too-distant past.

It’s been suggested that some of it might go to defending the administration from all the lawsuits that they are facing. The DOJ is currently overwhelmed by defending litigation poorly.

Trump’s life seems to be nothing but a ponzi scheme of lawyers. He just grifts and manipulates the legal system faster than his burn rate to cover his trail.

I would be constantly stressed living that sort of life.

Also, if the big law firms have pledged to do future work for the administration, doesn’t that mean they cannot represent clients in cases against the administration due to conflict of interest?

There are no conflicts of interests when we all follow dear leader.

Remember to use proper capitals when referring to the Dear Leader.

Failure to do so is disrespectful. And you know the risks of being disrespectful to Dear Leader (or failing to report on those who are disrespectful).
