Milestones Toward an Authoritarian Government

Congressman Garcia (D-CA) is fielding an inquiry by the US Attorney for DC because he called Trump “a dick” and uttered on CNN the phrase, “What the American public wants is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight.” Under other circumstances, I’d assume it’s routine, but considering the times we live in…

The whole situation smacks of a Mafia-like organization. Bend the knee to the Don(ald) and beg for a “favor”. You’ll owe a couple “favors” in return. And it would be a shame if something happened to that lovely daughter of yours. What’s her name again?

And if anyone in the familia squeals, breaking Omertà, then justice will be swift.
Its a Mario Puzo novel come to life.

I would do it again. And make a point of it.

They are just trying to silence people without having to go to the Courts.

As a Congresscritter, he could easily make that Govt lawyer look stupid.

Read an interesting comment today about Trump and Musk via a UK site.

I have to agree that we are now dealing with two narcissists that hold the reigns of power in the US.

Could also go in the Twitter thread, but seems better here.

There was a town hall meeting outside Atlanta with GOP Rep Rich McCormick. That’s a firmly red district. Apparently there was a lot of grumbling from constituents about people fired without reason, and particularly the CDC cuts.

Local reporter Greg Bluestein tweeted out some videos from the event with people complaining about the DOGE cuts. Suddenly those tweets were no longer visible, removed by the free speech man child. This is per long time political reporter Jamie Dupree.

One of the videos was reposted here. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/LierDZFHBPg There is nothing offensive included. I hope some first amendment challenges are coming. When Musk was removing posts he didn’t like on Twitter in the past, while it may have been worrisome there was nothing violating the first amendment or legally wrong with it. Now that he is a government official, censoring items he doesn’t like that are critical of his government function seems to me to be a clear first amendment violation.

All four of the words making the “DOGE” acronym are lies. DOGE is not “of” the government. It’s an independent thing given power over the government. So I’m not actually sure the first amendment counts here.

Musk is an employee of the “White House Office” and not DOGE according to court filings by the White House. They’re trying this Schrodinger’s cat thing where he both is an is not an employee, arguing either side whenever it suits them.

I’m sticking with what they filed in court, as clearly the other stuff coming from them is often misinformation or falsehoods.

Including the stuff they file in court

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/us/chris-kluwe-protest-arrested.html

His arrest isn’t really out of the norm and is what he intended, but I’m glad it got him publicity.

I’ve been playing a fun game lately - when I see something like this I intentionally check it on somewhere like OANN/Newsmax/Breitbart. I try to predict how it was covered and see what they said.

I assumed Breitbart would say he “rapidly approached” the stage or something, but that’s not how they spun it:

Kluwe appeared before the all-Republican Huntington Beach City Council, where he linked MAGA supporters to Nazis.

After a prolonged rant linking MAGA to dozens of nefarious movements and historical villains, Kluwe left the podium behind and began walking to where the council members sat.

I have to be honest, they included the emphasized (emphasis mine):

“I will now engage in the time-honored American tradition of peaceful civil disobedience,” Kluwe said as he approached them members.

Kluwe was taken to the ground and arrested by officers who carried him out of the chamber to raucous applause and cheering.

Kluwe was well-known throughout his career for adopting left-wing causes, such as gay rights and same-sex marriage.

And a little background on Chris, who lost his job for speaking out for equal rights, by Chris, 11 years ago:

Oh, and here is a fun article by Chris as well, 13 years ago:

We (my city council that I’m on) had a training recently on “First Amendment Audits.” This is where someone films a public place to see if someone tries to stop them and often attempts to bait them into a violation of their 1st amendment rights and then sues the government for that.

One thing we specifically talked about was people filming our council meetings which we already film and broadcast live on our youtube channel. The one thing that the police chief said they would intervene in was if the person attempted to approach or get on the dais where we sit. But just coming up to the mike and saying what he said would not cause anything to happen. We might intervene if his speech broached our standards of decorum but even then we would probably be fairly lenient unless they went on a threatening or vile rant full of f-bombs and such.

And initially, the individual would have been ejected from the meeting rather than immediately arrested. But since this guy was intent on being arrested he might have been accomodated.

Musk to cut Starlink access for Ukraine unless they give up mineral rights.

Who gets the rights? Trump and Musk personally getting it are my best guess.

Trump is an extortionist. I expect once he has carved up Ukraine, he will think of stronger tactics than tariffs in his economic war on Canada to persuade it to become the 51st state.

The language that Trump uses to describe Trudeau is as disrespectful as he uses for Zelenskyy. It is very disconcerting to see Trump’s similar attitudes towards Ukraine and Canada.

This is a bit like when your kids first discover poop humour. They know they are being bad making pooping sounds, etc., but ignore the disapproval from parents that comes with it. That behaviour is somewhat forgiveable in a four year old child but not so much with an adult doing Nazi salutes.
