Back in the days even before cable, I remember them playing this as the after-school movie (which had nothing to do with school, btw, it just referred to the time of day) on broadcast TV. It was pretty wtf for a 3:30PM movie.
Well, I thought there was a âstillâ in there
The Goodbye Girl (1977) - Marsha Mason, Richard Dreyfuss (won Best Actor)
Been thinking about a rewatch. How did it hold up after nearly 50 years?
I never felt The Goodbye Girl was Oscar-quality. Richard Dreyfuss was being Richard Dreyfuss, and he was a huge star at the time. I thought he was better in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
I thought Richard Dreyfussâ earlier roles as the kid in The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and his American Graffiti and Jaws roles were also excellent.
Donât forget his minute in âThe Graduate.â
Oh, yeah, the tenant who had Mr. Roperâs back
I agree. I brought up Close Encounters O3K because it was the same year as The Goodbye Girl and I think his Best Actor nod should have come from that instead.
Loved him as Bobâs shrink.
After 47 years, the closing scene of The Goodbye Girl made me cry for joy again. Great show!
East of Eden (1955). Iâm⌠conflicted. I can see why they focused on just a portion of the book to make a more exciting movie but they really missed the essence of the story. There is no East of Eden without Samuel and Lee imo. Good performances though, especially by James Dean.
A few days ago I was browsing Reddit looking for peopleâs recommendations on great, underrated movies. A couple people said the 2020 film âthe wrong Missyâ was a good one, how they laughed the whole way through it. It has David Spade and Sarah Chalke in it. Also Rob Schneider plays a small role, which should have told me everything I needed to know.
I laughed at a few parts, but overall it wasâŚnot good. Lesson learned.
agreed, luckily I read the book after watching the film
I donât watch the Peoplesâ Choice Awards, because I disagree with most peopleâs taste in things.
True. Same. I was optimistic because a lot of the movies I DO love (Dan in Real Life, Office Space, Empire Records) were also mentioned.
Christmas rewatch of Anna and the Apocalypse. Love a good Christmas zombie musical.
Dear Santa on Paramount. A new movie with Jack Black as Satan and a kid with dyslexia thinks he wrote his Christmas letter to Santa. Cameos by Kyle Gass and Ben Stiller, not unexpected. Not as bad as it sounded, but not great. A song or two from Post Malone.
I was the same way, and I got about 2/3 of the way through and was done with it.
At the theater : A Complete Unknown - true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history - Bob Dylan.
I think I have to rewatch it, but I liked it a lot. I found myself jamminâ out at the music they were singing.
I.Q. - Meg Ryan has fun with Einstein.
