Last movie you've watched

The one with Arnold?
No, not Schwarzenegger.

There was a recent one, I recall.

How long ago did you see Dune pt 1?

but not a total recall?

Please, Terminate these puns.

ā€œGo For Brokeā€ (1951) Fictionalized account of the 442nd. Very 50’s.

When it first came to HBO in 2021. It probably doesn’t help that I’m half watching my 1 year old at the same time.

I think both items will play into it.

I agree that Dune is not one that you can just ā€œsit, watch, enjoyā€ due to all of the moving parts of various plot lines. I’d go so far as to say that one who isn’t well versed with the books might benefit from watching the first one a couple of times to catch many of the subtle parts that are presented in an apparent ā€œpassing fashionā€ but end up being fairly important later on.

I watched Villeneuve’s movies twice and re-read Dune in between viewings. (I had last read Dune when it first came out). That certainly enhanced my appreciation of the movies. That might sound like a huge investment of time but it was very enjoyable.

I think Villeneuve’s movie still captures Herbert’s intended message around religion and politics that is more relevant to today’s audience than what one would read in the book.

What I found most interesting about the Dune franchise is the choice of religion used for the various ā€œreligiousā€ groups . . . including the a-religious religion of the Bene Gesserit.

Yes, the Bene Gesserit can not be regarded as a true religious order. I am still struggling as to whether they are good or evil. Probably both.

There are, of course, several religions revealed in the Dune books.

I think they pretty much do what’s best for the sisterhood. Whether that is good or evil depends on what is best for the sisterhood when they take whatever action they take.

FWIW, Trump would fit in very well with the Bene Gesserit philosophy.

Yes.

Good and evil are not absolutes: what is perceived as evil by one person can be viewed as good by another. It is what you believe is best for the world that you view as ā€œgoodā€.

even more so . . . exploit the local religious beliefs to attain your own ends.

ā€œPinball: The Man Who Saved The Gameā€ (2022) on Hulu. Boring picture a distracting mustache that looks extremely fake, but I’m a sucker for pinball and those old machines. The ā€œunnoticed narrator in the storyā€ bit helped a little. Otherwise, Hallmark-level tripe.
Have started ā€œAmsterdamā€ (2022) which has a stellar cast but plodding along.

Joy on Netflix. This docudrama chronicles the 10 year medical journey to the first IVF baby in 1978, Louise Brown. Very entertaining and interesting. Huge story and controversy at the time.

Blood Simple. Coen brothers first? Was def one of theirs. Just ok imo

The Boston Strangler on hulu. Entertaining in a grim way (based on true story)

Blood Simple is amazing. On the 3rd viewing I was still picking up things I previously misunderstood. In other words, what each of the characters thought was happening.

They Still Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969) - What a physical and psychological thrill ride. Great performances all around, including Jane Fonda. There are reasons it was nominated for 9 Oscars which is the most without being nominated for Best Picture. I’m not sure how I’d never heard of it. But it’s so damn depressing that I only recommend for film enthusiasts.
