It’s the Jerry Seinfeld starring/producing/writing effort about a bunch of cereal magnates competing to market a toaster based breakfast hot pocket - aka Pop Tarts. It’s rapid paced, highly stylistic and edited by some guy or gal who must have been on speed.
I put it in the “so bad that it is actually a little funny” category.
There are just a ton of familiar comedians and comedic actors sprinkled throughout the effort. Some good, some not so much. The best line of the show was by one of a precocious pair of kids, who were found to be eating fruit filling they find in the dumpsters outside of the factory.
Jerry: “But it’s garbage!” …
Kid: “Is it? Or is it the hot fruit lightning THE MAN doesn’t want you to have?”
I think “Hot Fruit Lightning” is a worthy nickname for someone.
The Florida Project – 2017
No, it is not about WDW, code named “The Florida Project” while the Disney brothers bought up the land. The movie takes place adjacent to WDW.
Willem Dafoe again puts his whole self into a role, and was nominated for an Oscar.
Sad movie, showing characters on the border of homelessness.
All The Light We Cannot See (Netflix) – More movie than something I binged (4 hrs). Well made and well acted, but hit and miss for me. I liked the story of the underground but felt the supernatural jewel plot was a distraction.
It was really well done. As someone who followed their every move in the 60’s and bought every album as it came out, I loved this documentary. Watching John and Paul collaborating on Two of US was awesome.
Unfrosted on Netflix. A sort of stupid funny movie. The best part is the casting. So many familiar faces in cameos. Just fun to see who was in it. Many roles were so short due to the number of cameos.
The Fall Guy at the theater. A bit long, but a fun ride. Lots of homage to stunt people. Weird seeing Hannah Waddingham in such a role. Also, a bit of an odd role for the future James Bond. Lots of action. Stay for the post credit scenes. A few special guest starts at the end.
Anyone But You on Netflix. Missed it at the theater. Traditional rom-com with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Do they love each other. Do they hate each other? Since its a rom-com, you can guess the answer. Lots of funny parts.
The Equalizer on Netflix. Always a good watch.
Challengers at the theater. Zendaya and two young guys. Basically a weird love triangle set against a tennis backdrop. She was the phenom, they were low level players and best friends when they all met. She hooks up with one of the guys, blows out her leg, becomes his wife/coach/mentor. He wins a bunch of grand slams, buddy falls apart along the way. Not nearly as good as it looked in trailers.
Not exactly, but some cool references near the end. I think they use the TV theme song as well in one of the action scenes. Don’t want to throw in any spoilers.
Watched a couple of movies with my kids the last two nights.
Fantastic Planet (1973)
Saw this pop up on Plex a while ago and recalled seeing it when I was a kid. It’s animated French sci-fi from the 70’s, so it’s pretty weird, but it’s a good story imo. The visuals really stick with you too. It’s like if the Beatles made Yellow Submarine when they were on some even crazier drugs, and let Yoko take over at some point. Kids were into it, so I think I have successfully passed on my childhood trauma to them. Mission accomplished.
The Dark Crystal (1982)
Muppets meet lord of the rings. Another fond memory from childhood. Oldest kid requested it. She saw part of it when she was like 5 and it freaked her out, so she wanted to give it another shot. Kids all liked this one too.
We might do Labyrinth tonight. I haven’t seen that in ages.
Depends on the kid I think. You’re going to see some alien boobs, and the themes are fairly mature, but the animation is pretty crude, so it’s not like realistic sex scenes or whatever. My kids are 10-15 y.o. and besides being embarrassed about the boobage they were fine.
