Weaselette is looking forward to seeing this one. She really likes his game show - The Greatest Average American. He’s very funny. His SNL skits are great.
Contact (1997)
I’ve been wanting to see this one for years and finally got around to it. Based on the Carl Sagan book. Really enjoyed it. Jodie Foster is great as the SETI scientist.
Project Hail Mary.
imaginative - agreed.
the interaction between the main characters was super wholesome and sweet.
i think it could have used more pointed editing as multiple times they beat something to death and it was 2 and a half hours.
It was wholesome for sure. I found that really refreshing. It’s probably not going to be a lost-in-the-void movie I binge watch over and over, like Castaway, Apollo 13, or the Martian. But I did purchase it with some soon-expiring Amazon prime digital credits.
Muriel’s Wedding. I like Toni Collette a lot and hadn’t seen it before. Won’t be watching again, but didn’t hate it.
How to Train Your Dragon - the 2025 live action remake. It followed the animated one very closely so nothing new of ground breaking but was well done I thought and much better then Most if not all of Disney live action remakes.
The Last Emperor – HBOMax
Wonderfully filmed.
FWIW, my wife did point out that the main downside of the live action is the loss of “exaggerated” facial displays that help young kids to better process some of the emotions felt by the character. This exaggeration is pretty easy to do in an animated form w/o necessarily taking away (or going “over the top”) from whatever else is going on.
oh my, i saw that when it came out. advertised as a comedy but it was pretty sad, right?
The Running Man (Airplane) It was ok. A bit slow at times and silly at other. Unlike a physical specimen like Schwarzenegger, Glen Powell wasn’t an obvious choice. I’ll assume this is closer to the original King story.
Arco (Airplane) Decent animated feature, though I found it rather depressing
Avatar: Fire and Ash (Airplane) It was ok. Some of the acting I felt was particularly poor and didn’t feel all that different from the last film
GOAT (Airplane) Decent animated feature, overall I liked it, and not being the NBA I was able to accept some things better
Juror #2 (Airplane) 12 Angry Men with a twist. It was ok, but too far fetched in some courtroom aspects
Solo Mio (Airplane) @Nerdalert - Kevin James alert. Better than I anticipated not as broad as many Kevin James comedies. It was a nice rom com
Merrily We Roll Along (Netflix) A filming of the show, I believe in front of an audience, but no real audience noise and close-ups. It tells the story of a musical partnership and friendship in reverse. It was generally very good, but the frenetic opening scene was too much for me and made the overall less appealing. and like they quip in the film, there is no sing-a-long melodic music.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (Airplane) Decent finale to the series and films. Nothing terribly special
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man ((Netflix) Also a decent ending to the series, though I don’t believe I was craving closure on this one
Between the Temples (Netflix) I liked this, though a bit uncomfortable. I am curious if a non-Jew would care for this film at all about a Cantor having a nervous breakdown. Carol Kane was wonderful.
Kneecap (Netflix) Actual Irish rap group, fighting the establishment to perform in Irish. I never heard of them, but were performing in Belfast when I was just there.
Yes it was quite sad, portraying loneliness and depression. The mother struck me as quite tragic throughout, and she commits suicide at the end. All in all not a feelgoodery.
It is.
I haven’t seen the new one, but the original story wasn’t much like Schwarzenager movie version as I recall though it’s been a long time since I read the story. i do look forward to seeing this one when it’s available on streeming.
Isle of the Dogs (HBO) - Really enjoyed it. Would probably put it in the bottom half of Wes Anderson films I’ve seen though.
Marty Supreme (HBO) - Wacky, over-the-top and mostly enjoyable.
10 Things I Hate About You (Disney) - I’m not much for Rom-Coms, but this was just fun.
Hell or High Water (HBO) - Had some similar new age western vibes as No Country for Old Men. Decent story and I’m a fan of Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine.
Thunderbolts (Disney) - Decent. Some cool characters. Hated the fake Russian accents.
Disclosure Day. We had a full day to kill before our red eye and this was a way to sit down for a few hours. I didn’t care for it, it wasn’t my kind of movie, and it felt super long, but that’s what I was wanting today.
Saw it last week; my conclusion was, it’s not actually a “government coverup of aliens that that rocks the world when revealed” movie, it’s just an extended game of hide-and-seek. . I have the same feel that I didn’t care for it.
Toy Story 5 - enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Well done.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die
This was a fun adventure. Sam Rockwell is from the future, trying to save the world from A.I. that takes over the world.
Toy Story 5
Saw this with my son. It was cute and funny and a little sad. Pretty much what you expect from this franchise. I feel like they could have stopped at 3, but 4 and 5 were entertaining.
“Atomic Blonde” on HBO.
Meh.
I prefer a movie where the plot and production of it is so good you can’t remember that it has action sequences.
Not this one. I mean, I appreciate Charlize going topless for a few scenes. But there is so much action for a reason: meh plot. Surprise ending had no build-up. Whoa, the whole time she was this and not that! Brilliant! /s
Oh, and drag out her execution so she can get out of it. Six times, but I lost count.
A History of Violence (HBO) - Decently entertaining. Feels like an action movie from the late 80’s / early 90’s, rather than 2005.
Fast and Furious 8 (HBO) - Watched ~20 minutes. Finally found a movie to cure my insomnia.
