also Flipped - another Reiner coming off Netflix. Really cute. A lot of this worked here, mostly because they were kids, misunderstandings that in an adult romance would drive me nuts.. Never even heard of this one before.
People We Meet on Vacation on Netflix. Follows a young man and woman who meet in college and end up sharing a ride to the same hometown. Things go wrong and afterwards, decide to meet each year for a vacation week, regardless of what is going on in their life. Light rom-com, but the twists make it very watchable. Enjoyed this much more than expected.
Nonnas on Netflix. As other have said here, very nice story, based on a true one. Vince Vaughn honors his mom by opening a restaurant where all the cooks are grandmothers (Nonnas). Nice idea, well executed.
Project Hail Mary at the theater. Best movie in some time. My wife read the book before hand and thought this was great adaptation. I just enjoyed the film. Go see it.
Finished âYou Only Live Twice.â Meh.
Loved the Toyota 2000GT scenes.
Itâs got most of the spy film tropes that are spoofed. Volcano âlair.â Piranha pool of death. Space ships.
Notable: Screenplay by Roald Dahl.
Folks who watch Project Hail Mary might find this story interesting. It resonated with me as Ryan Goslingâs retro cardigan was popular when I was a kid. My grandmother made them for me and my brother in the late 1950s.
Showed my 10yo the newer Parent Trap. He liked it. Showed him the one from 1961 next and while he wasnât a fan at first, he said he thought it was ultimately âcharming.â
Mrs. VA didnât enjoy it nearly as much as I, but sheâs not exactly a big Sci Fi fan. But she did enjoy many of the scenes (like the flashbacks and the initial interactions with the alien).
I thought is was very enjoyable . . . havenât seen a movie that excited my imagination like this one did in a long time. I did find that slight twist at the end that made you re-evaluate the whole movie (part of the source of the excitation of my imagination!).
I would definitely watch this over again.
FWIW, I probably enjoyed it more on IMAX given a lot of the space scenes, but I donât think itâs necessary since a lot of the focus was on the story line and not on the special effects (but the SFX were superb, IMO; especially since none of them took you away from the main story arc).
I watched it last night with my oldest daughter and English SIL.
My SIL thought it was too sentimental whereas I thought the relationship between Grace snd Rocky was fundamental. My daughter loved it because most fourty-something women love Ryan Gosling.
I loved it but I also loved the book which it is faithful to. Reading the book was helpful as it provided deeper insights than the movie, which is usually the case.
Before the movie, the theatre showed excerpts from the third Dune movie despite it not premiering until mid-December. That will be a mass outing for our family.
watched this on a plane. wasâŚok.
bruce could have done a shorter PSA on the importance of seeking therapy when you are depressed.
JAWâs performance made me wonder if Bruce watches âThe Bearâ and convinces himself that he started a restaurant one time. he plays an aloof and depressed guy really well
All Night Long 1960s mashup of Jazz legends and Othello for no apparent reason. It does not work, it does not really try. Still fine.
At one moment itâs âIâm evil Shakespeare villain is going to spoil your record contracts while smoking a âjazz cigaretteâ, mwahahaaâ and then itâs âIâm Dave Brubeck, do you mind if I play on your piano? Okay.â
âWicked: For Good.â
OMFG This was way too long, and not enough Erivoâs singing, which is far more awesome than Grandeâs.
And shit, hit us over the head repeatedly about those in power lying to us. We get it. âTalking animals = the oppressed.â Singing, literally, to the choir â people who enjoy musicals. Trying to reach those whose minds you want to change is a lot more challenging, and not as profitable.
One more: Whatâs with the makeupification of new words?
Regarding Us (VCR - canât remember station) Transwoman fired from Teaching at Catholic school. Befriends a girl with two dadâs and the trans child who didnât know (he) was trans until another child decided they were. I liked the main character, everyone else grated on me. and it was a good subject but way too âin your faceâ with too many people trying to be quirky and the bad people being too bad. Wasted opportunity imo.
Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (Airplane) It was ok. Well acted, good mix of music. Good look at the process. Some flashback to his up bringing. But somehow lacking.
Affeksjonsverdi (Sentimental Value) (Airplane) Good movie, I think I was expecting a great movie. Interesting, well acted, but odd pacing and it just never full dragged me in
