Hamnet (Peacock) This is a hard one. First the romance, but it wasn’t really that romantic, no long sonnets of love, more towards feuding families and detailed childbirth.

Then married life, Shakespeare wrote many major works in those first ten years, but no real feel of his success. Followed by the tragedy, and as then as now how that tears couples apart.

Then the play, which was magical. Jesse Buckley’s face and reactions were amazing. She is definitely an Oscar front runner, not just for that, but throughout. The movie is too flawed to win, especially with the academy embracing less mainstream films, lately. For Shakespeare fiction, I much preferred Shakespeare In Love.

Buckley I recently saw in Wicked Little Letters - and want to see more of her. Saw Chernobyl also, but didn’t remember her specifically. Interestingly, has also done movie versions of The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet.

Waitress: The Musical (Cinemax) Saw the original movie (20 years ago??) and loved it. I felt this was more driven by the music and less by the plot. It was all very nice, well done and the music was very pleasant, but nothing memorable. It was racier than I remember the original being and that made the affair between a pregnant woman and her OBGYN seem much creepier to me.

The Great Lillian Hall (HBO) Good movie of an aging stage actress dealing with Alzheimer’s. Excellent cast, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates. No Sunset Blvd., but a good watch.

Arthur the King (Starz) Based on truth, except for the nationality and names and…
Decent watch with Mark Wahlberg as an extreme endurance racer. He is a rather pathetic character as the organizer, and I don’t understand a competition where getting an IV costs you 4 hrs, but you can rent a motor boat. Anyway, they befriend a dog who follows them throughout. Nice film, even if it didn’t totally click.

Den stygge stesøsteren (The Ugly Stepsister) (Kanopy) Cinderella from the Stepsister’s perspective. Not the Maguire flipped fairy tale version (which was awful), but a “truer” version of one of the more violent retellings. Don’t believe Grimm either, maybe more original. This was a horror movie, not a fairy tale. A few scene had me looking the other way. It was interesting to a degree, but not something I would want to watch again.

Perfectly a Strangeness (Kanopy) Documentary short, showing three donkeys walking the desert and to an observatory. Some beautiful scenes. Though got off track a bit in the observatory showing the mechanical workings

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, theater. This is marketed as a time-travel, anti-AI apocalypse movie. Whereas, in fact, it is either a multiverse movie or AIs are battling each other for control of the Matrix movie or a free will vs. determinism movie. I could probably write a whole article comparing the theories, but I probably won’t.

Watching Oliver! My wife said she likes the song “Who will buy”, and I thought it sounded a lot like “You know how I feel” by Muse. Which she pointed out was also from an old musical, and also sounds a lot like Summertime, which is also from an old musical.

Anyway the some of the songs and dance are a bit much, but it’s pretty cute!

Project Hail Mary in theater. Read this book a while ago and have been looking forward to the movie. My oldest went to see it with a bunch of friends Friday night, and I took my son (12 y.o.) to see it Saturday. Everyone loved it! They did a great job of adapting the story imo. A lot of the science stuff was ditched in favor of emphasizing the relationship with the alien. I think it works better as a movie that way. In the book it’s great to work through some of the details but I think the movie would big down a bit. Ryan Gosling is great in it too. I’m amazed at how consistent that guy is. I can’t think of a bad performance by him.

I always enjoy Gosling’s performances and hope to do an Easter Weekend outing with “my boys” to see this movie.

Gosling has had four Oscar nominations with zero wins presumably because you need to be in a movie that is considered “serious by the Academy to win?This movie probably doesn’t meet that bar either?

It’s early yet, but I think it will get several nominations. They really nailed it imo. He is pretty much the whole movie, so he should have a chance.

Watched the Bob Odenkirk action movies “Nobody” and “Nobody 2”. Still a little weak on the back story that makes him somehow a total badass. tons of CGI stuff. super violent. That said, enjoyable enough to have wacthed them

Sinners - I thought it was a pretty good story. Better than most in the horror genre. Not sure it deserved all the accolades it got but maybe last year was just an overall weak crop of films so it rose by comparison.

I thought it was a week year. However, Sinners was so much more than just a horror movie. Thats what made it do interesting.

Wicked: For Good (Peacock) Just ok. This is the oddest continuation of a film. First Part is Wicked I, but the 2nd gets the For Good. The first gets 10 Oscar noms, wins a couple to technical stuff, this gets none. And a general feeling it didn’t win more so the complete picture could be honored. I really loved the first and looked forward to this. Definitely the weaker part of the story, but you wouldn’t have felt it as much if it just flowed through.

This felt too disconnected to the first, many plot years later, you lost interest in the characters and the plot felt skipped. The music was nice, but not memorable and they took a 2 1/2 hour play and made a 5 hour movie and it felt it.

I had not seen the show, so some disconnects from Wizard of Oz and its own plot

Scarecrow seemed to be aware of who he was and his love for the witch, so why go with them?
In WoO, Dorothy threw the water because scarecrow was on fire, that did not happen.
Odd editing, barely showing Dorothy or Tin Man, made a creepy effect

Warfare (HBO) Good war film. Creation of a seals mission going wrong in Iraq, based on the memories of the survivor. Didn’t feel incredibly original, but avoided the POV type battles, where I lose perspective

as many people who know me here, know, I watch a lot of movies. In this forum I have been just posting newer movies. But, just watched two that I am shocked I had never seen before.

Shake Hands With The Devil - I love Cagney, have seen 60 of his movies. One of his best roles. Great cast. Great morality play. A more subtly evil Cagney.

Ghosts of Mississippi - Again a big fan of Reiner films. This was a very good movie, not great (hard to do without embellishing history) - not as dynamic as A Few Good Men. It was on Netflix for a short period after Reiner’s death. and as an aside Medgar Evers has been an overlooked icon of the civil rights movement.

Finished “Thunderball,” 4th in the Bond Series.
Netflix has these until 4/20. Pretty sure I won’t finish the series by then.
