Last movie you've watched

I just rewatched Blade Runner, which is set in 2019

Flying 80’s cars. And we will still have pay phones.

Try watching several episodes of Star Trek (Original Series), and several episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

That is quite the trip to see how the view on the future changes as well.

Basically, it’s “everything we have now, but slightly cooler.”
Or, there might be one thing futuristic, but everything else is the same.
Take the first “Total Recall.” Can take trips to Mars, can take a vaycay in your own brain, but the cars? Even the Johnnie-Cab was 80’s. Sharon Stone was working out to 80’s-style videos in 80’s clothes.

Let Him Go. I didn’t know anything about the movie other than the blurb describing it on HBO Max.

Following the death of their son, a retired sheriff and his wife set out to rescue their young grandson from a dangerous family.

It went way darker than I was expecting, I don’t know if there were any previews that would have led me to expect where it went, but I didn’t watch any previews. From the blurb I was expecting it to be more “rescue our grandson from a cult that killed our son”. Not what it was.

Chef, was cute feel good movie on Netflix. I mean hardly memorable but it was an enjoyable little film.

Chef was on of my favorite movies the year it came out (2014).

“The Hours”
Three other awesome actresses, and in only one scene Toni Collette outshines them all.

Watched Jungle Cruise tonight. Was entertaining and predictable. Didn’t realize Metallica reworked one of their songs for the movie. That was pretty cool

American Ultra

One of those movies that tries to be too many things. Jesse Eisenberg is a stoner loser who, unknown to him, turns out to be a CIA sleeper killer. It’s got plenty of over-the-top gore, but it also is trying to be a bit of a comedy, plus a romance with Kristin Stewart. It’s full of plot holes and the casting is totally cliche. I was able to get past the gore and predictability and plot holes, and thought it still ended up being reasonably enjoyable as mindless entertainment. But I could see others thinking it was awful.

Space Jam: A New Legacy - It is almost through its run on HBO Max so I figured I’d give it a go. I want my 2 hours back. My expectations were pretty low and it underperformed. I guess if you go into it trying to count all the Easter eggs and references, it might be fun, but otherwise, a waste of time.

Beckett - On Netflix, a thrill a minute ride with John David Washington as a very confused and chased man in Greece. It was just released a few days ago. It is one of the best Netflix movies of the year.

First, a couple from Netflix:

Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning - I’m not sure what to think, seems to be a “based on a true story” of a 17th century samurai type guy. Film is Japanese but I used dubbing which was pretty stilted. Tells the story of Battasoi(?) who is a pretty young assassin taking out Shogunate guys. He will stop when the Shogunatr has fallen and never kill again. It was OK, but I don’t know any of the back story.

Major Grom: Plague Doctor - This is Russian and the dubbing was much better. Major Grom is a police detective with a “I don’t play well with others” style. At first I thought he might have super powers, but he doesn’t. He’s just a cop trying to hunt down the Plague Doctor. There were a couple twists that I never saw coming. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

At the theater, we saw Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds. When we saw the trailer a long time ago (pre-COVID) we thought it looked like a lot of fun, but trailers often disappoint. Not this time. It was pure Reynolds and he killed it. If you liked the Easter eggs in Ready Player One, there’s quite a bit for you here too. Highly recommend.

Reminiscence on HBO Max. It stars Hugh Jackman in a sort of apocalyptic future where sea levels have rise dramatically. His business is to kelp people relive memories, in their mind. They have some sort of tech to do this. It is also a tool for law enforcement. He meets a woman who has lost/misplaced her keys and wants his help finding them. The movie got beat up by critics and I found that the trailer I saw wasn’t really a good indication of the story at all. It is pretty noir and gritty. I found I Iiked it more than I thought I would.

Captain Marvel. Why did the cars look like they were from the 70’s (or at least 80’s — they all seemed to be large sedans) when the movie was specifically set in 1995?

We had to laugh—the Radio Shack just down from the Blockbuster. They could have filmed it in our town.

I watched that last week. I’ll have to watch it again with my wife after reading your comments. I was less impressed than you seem to have been. It did seem more realistic in terms of how he was reacting to what was happening to him until more and more stuff happened. Then it just became another good guy is a Timex. And overall, I didn’t fully understand the background plot. It seemed they explained everything at the end but for some reason by that point I wasn’t really believing anything anyone said about anything. It just seemed to confuse me even more.

Last movie I watched was probably Nomads about 3 months ago.

WW1984…meh.

Let’s shove 80s stuff down your throat, and also PS Gal Gadot is pretty, especially when we put her in all these outfits you can’t afford.

Stuck in Love - This is from 2012 and has a great cast, young and not so young. Early roles for Lily Collins, Nat Wolff and Logan Lerman. Adult roles for Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Conolley and Kristen Bell. Kinnear, a famous writer, is divorced from Connelly. The kids, Collins and Wolff are also writers with Collins college age character just getting published. The story was very interesting as all of them came to grips with where their lives were heading.

Buster’s Mal Heart - This was a recommended movie, not sure from where. I still don’t know what happened in the movie despite reading a number of very long articles trying to explain it. Rami Malek stars as Jonah (also Buster, the same character after he goes off the reservation as it were), a night clerk at a motel in maybe Colorado. He lives with his wife and young daughter at his in-laws’s house. He is sleep deprived working the graveyard shift and ends up watching a lot of very late night religious shows. It takes place during the lead up to Y2K and he starts to believe in something called the inversion which will reset humanity. His only hope is to get through the “tunnel” to the other side first. There are strange dream sequences that may or may not be real. Very interesting but very confusing. Open to lot of different interpretations.

How It Ends - The world is ending tomorrow due to an asteroid strike. A young woman (and her metaphysical younger self who is now visible to others) does a walk about in her town/city (maybe LA?) and meets a lot of characters along the way to make amends with her divorced parents. This is the only one of the three released this year (Amazon Prime).

The Courier 2021. Very well done spy movie based on real events of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Not sure how many artistic liberties they took but it was very interesting.
