Juneteenth

Yeah but we’d have all sorts of days if we remembered people who suffered in other countries.

In fact we could have a Japanese Internment Remembrance Day

and that Japanese Internment Remembrance Day isn’t a federal holiday either. why do black people get 2?

Is this the right terminology?

And in fairness to the count I think slavery is probably the worst thing the US has done so they’ve certainly got severity on their side.

well, to be clearer, i mean african american blacks since both MLK day and Juneteenth mostly is that group. But pretty sure the term “black” mostly means that group anyway and is perfectly fine now. I think some prefer it because African American implies that you’re not a real american.

I just mean I’m used to “black people” but not “the blacks”

it’s the same thing!

fine, edited.

okay fine, i’ll settle for them nixing Columbus day ASAP

Interesting. I’m not sure I’ve ever had a job where I didn’t get Presidents Day off. I mean, not when I was working fast food or waiting tables as a high school / college student of course, but other than that… think I’ve always gotten it off.

Don’t get MLK Day due to year-end financial reporting though. My last employer had it as an official holiday, but my team always had to work. They’d provide lunch though, since the cafeteria was closed.

We got a use-it-or-lose-it “off-book” floating holiday in place of MLK Day.

I’ve never gotten Columbus Day off though.

I was trying to avoid this side discussion Ms fan started, but I’ll just throw in that
“Once we were slaves, now we are free” is a central line from the Jewish Passover Seder.

My current company doesn’t observe any of those 3 holidays (MLK, Presidents, Columbus).

We do get Juneteenth, though.

But we were slaves in Egypt, a really really really long time ago. We weren’t demeaned as a fraction of a person in the constitution. The US didn’t nearly split up over us, and then oppress us for ages anyway.

I’m way happier having some holidays celebrating the end of US slavery and the advancement of human rights than a bunch of religious or ethnic holidays.

I’d personally be fine dropping Christmas, but it would be too hard to staff stuff, so it’s practical to make it a formal holiday.

(and Jews are the only groups other than the majority Christians who get their Sabbath off every week. I do not feel under-represented in US holidays.)

So, now that this is a real federal holiday, how do I celebrate?

I happen to be hosting a party that day

I even presciently mentioned it would be Juneteenth in the email inviting people. So, what should I do? Any traditional foods? Music? I’m not going to do fireworks even if that’s traditional, but it would be nice to know.

I think your enforced segregation of people into two classes with different levels of access & privilege should drive the lesson home for the unclean kids, Miss Van Pelt. :+1:

You may be confusing Juneteenth with MLK? But hey, you give me a good idea, we could do a follow-up party on MLK when all the kids will have been fully vaxxed.

Still looking for suggestions for food, decoration, whatever.

 I get it

Yeah, seems like there could be a little overlap, but some of these things might be more appropriate for MLK. I was going to suggest you set up your food & drinks something like this:

But again, that’s more MLK than Juneteenth.

Do you & Schroeder have any chains you could put on the little ones, maybe link them all together at 6’ intervals? Would be a good object lesson while also slowing them down & making it easier for the clean party-goers to hear them coming in order to maintain distance. Win-win-win.

Or just Google it like Kevin did for you.

I’m only expecting two kids, and they are siblings. So the chains won’t be needed. But thanks for your constructive suggestions! I didn’t think I needed to separate the food, but hey, maybe that’s a good idea.

Right now I’m thinking red velvet cupcakes in honor of the day. Then everyone’s portion can be separate but equal.
