Okay i havent really paid close attention to the details but am i right in that johnny depp was awarded 15 million by a jury merely because amber heard acused him of abuse?

I’m not biased, or if anything I started out biased in Depp’s favor because I think he’s a good actor.
But the evidence is pretty overwhelming that he abused her. A UK court found a double digit number of instances of him abusing her. (Was it 10 or 12? I forget.)
So when she called herself “a public figure who represents domestic abuse” she wasn’t defaming Depp if he abused her.
Ergo, his case seems meritless to me. It will be interesting to see how an appeals court rules.
I think the idea is that it represents a loss of income to him. Sadly, I think he gets paid substantially more than you do.
And part was punitive damages.
My verdict is still out on him since I don’t have much information other than some funny reaction reels that came up on Facebook (not the most reliable source of information to be sure).
His texts don’t sway me one way or the other only because I’ve certainly considered burning somebody’s house down via text, or indicated a preference for said person to drown in a bathtub. Most people who know me would know I didn’t really mean it but - it sounds bad either way.

Depp won’t get it if she doesn’t have it though. And there’s ways for her to shield what she does have… if it’s even necessary since she may not even have to pay it, or may get something from him in the appeal.

The judge who heard the similar case in the UK had all the same information as the US jury, and more experience with abuse cases. And Depp lost the case in the UK, despite them having very strong libel laws. The UK courts ruled it was okay for a paper to publish that he was an abuser because he had committed several acts of abuse.
They’re two completely different court cases though. I don’t think you can compare them. His UK libel suit was against The Sun (Depp v News Group Newspapers Ltd) vs his US suit (Depp v Heard).
Depp claimed The Sun defamed him by calling him a “wife beater” in their publications. The UK judge found Heard provided evidence that proved he was abusive, so he lost.
Depp claimed that her Washington Post Op-ed defamed him, but she claimed it wasn’t about him. However, from cross-examination, she slipped and admitted it was about him. I think if it was Depp v Washington Post, he probably would have lost because he would have to prove that WP knew the claims in the Op-ed were false.
If you look at her WP Op-ed, they’ve added an editor’s note on the specific statements from the Op-ed that the jury found were false and defamatory.

I don’t especially want a jury system. No one gave me the choice.
There are a lot of ways that i think the UK system is better, honestly. In particular, i think our adversarial system is toxic. In the UK the lawyers are at least theoretically supposed to advocate for the truth, but for their client.

But if Depp did abuse her, then how was what she said defamatory? If it’s true it’s
not defamation. The UK trial found the preponderance of the evidence was he had abused her.
