yeah, Israel defending themselves against constant rocket fire, civilian massacres, and kidnappings is the same as Russia invading UkraineâŚ
clarification incoming in 3âŚ2âŚ
Found this interesting quote from the Pew Research Center, kind of old, from 2012, but still.
More than four-fifths of all Jews live in just two countries, the United States (41%) and Israel (41%). The largest remaining shares of the global Jewish population are in Canada (about 3%), France (2%), the United Kingdom (2%), Germany (2%), Russia (2%) and Argentina (between 1% and 2%).
It would be interesting to get an accounting of how many military vs civilians make up those numbers of killed so far. And are they still counting the 400-500 killed at that hospital as killed by Israel?
I do worry that Israel is going to lose support based on how the war is being reported. But I doubt Israel is going to detail every target and why it was chosen. That would probably go some ways to helping their side.
And last I read, Israel, Egypt and pretty much everyone but Hamas is ready and willing to get foreign nationals out of Gaza, but Hamas wonât let them go without meeting their conditions of stopping the bombing and bringing in supplies (which they will mostly steal anyway).
âObviously, you are not a cosmopolitan citizen of the world as I, knower of all known things, amâŚâ
This is clearly something you donât understand given you are equating the two.
It is much worse than the current war in Israel. By a huge margin.
Been fighting since 2014.
300,000 dead (100k Ukraine, 200k Russia)
Vast swathes of the country have been destroyed. And mined.
And its not ending anytime soon because both sides are well armed now. So its a war of attrition.
The Gaza situation will be over (one way or another) in about 3 months (according to Israeli sources).
Did i nail it or what?
Most didnât think that the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand wouldnât have resulted in The Great War as well.
Or that the 1919 Treaty of Versailles would be the end of all such conflicts.
Or the National Socialistsâ invasion of Poland spawning an even bigger war.
Letâs avoid lines like this in our discussion. It does very little to advance the discussion of the topic and has the high potential of having the discussion devolve into uncivil territory.
Consider this a soft warning to all.
The justification to go to war can be separated from how each side prosecutes the war. You can have a justified action of going to war, and yet still fail to prosecute it morally and humanely. Letâs not conflate those two distinct moral choices.
Hamas fails on both ends. I fervently hope Israel can pass both, but so far it doesnât look like that is going to happen.
I was curious about Jewish population by state in the US, so I googled.
it would take a lot more than 50k for me to move to Dothan, and I can pass as WASPy and southern as anyone lololololololololololololol
I think this could very well start WW3, and it is much more likely to start WW3 than any Cold War-ish standoff between the US and China.
Remember â itâs $50k to move to a low COL area. If you were a homeowner in the NYC metro area and took a look at what you could buy in Dothan⌠folks might be tempted.
If/when Iran gets involved, turning the mess into a full-scale regional warâŚgiven how stretched the west already is, having depleted its surplus military materiel to support Ukraine. and given the attention the US will give to the elevated conflict, I could see China seeing an opportunity to launch an attack on Taiwan, gambling that the US wonât be able to intervene in 3 major wars at once.
If the Israel Hamas conflict blows up into a regional war, Iâd say Chinaâs chances of military move against Taiwan goes way up.
I do believe you started the comparisonâŚ
People who want to criticize Israeli tactics/strategy here need to ask what should they do that will stop the attacks?
Again, Hamas uses the Gaza civilians as human shields. They store munitions in schools, mosques, and hospitals. They divert fuel, food, and construction material from civilian use to military use to attack Israeli civilians. Hamas refuses to remove the call for the destruction of Israel and killing of Jews from its charter.
So whatâs your plan for dealing with the situation? What realistic option would you take to stop the attacks? Because its pretty obvious that negotiation hasnât worked.
âWhat should Israel do?â Is the wrong question. The correct one is involves the world, not just Israel. If for no other reason, someone other than Israel must be involved in the resettlement of the Palestinians. Israel cannot simply say, "USA TAKES 31%, EGYPT 28%,⌠and ship them out. Itâs gonna take cooperation.
Again, look to Sarajevo. Howâd that come to pass? A big difference here is the state of the US government. In the 90s you had Bill Clinton and functioning Congress. Now Billy was probably the best politician of his generation. He was also a dirt bag. He could lie to your face, with a twinkle in his eyes and make people well up in sympathy tears. Scary guy. But he got Russia to sit tight. We got no one with those skills? today. Sadly, the last POTUS managed to damage the countryâs image with a lot of nations, but thats the way it goes sometimes.
Itâs a world problem. Not a single countryâs. Nor a single religionâs. I mean Hamas is a world problem. Imagine if they got their hands on an old Russian nuke or two. Anyone one unclear on what Hamas would do? Things would get very serious, very fast.. so letâs stop acting like its Israelâs problem.
I find it a more meaningful question than âthe worldâ, since nobody controls the world. And at least some people sort of control Israel.
Maybe you mean âIsrael should do nothing until Egypt steps in to take refugeesâ or âIsrael should do whatever the US and UN wantâ or something like thay. But just saying âask the worldâ sounds like a cop-out.
Unfortunately, today we canât reasonably rely on the US Congress to do anything. Almost certainly theyâll provide money for military action through the budget, but only Band-Aid money, nothing to deal with the issues.
Without the US leading the cause there is little hope for a global solution, though it is possible for our allies to act without us.
One of the truest lines in Independence Day: Brit pilot gets a radio message: Radio officer: âItâs the Americans. They say they have a plan.â Pilot: âAbout time. What do they want us to do?â
Seems to be Europeâs leadership these days. Make noises and do nothing till the U.S. picks a direction.
