Is inflation back?

What if the horse could fly?

So is inflation going to remain high for a few more months before moderating? If so, it is well within the realm of possibility that inflation for 2021 could be north of 6%. What would that do to the expectations of people? Would they still be willing to invest their money for the next 10 years at 2%?

It’s not that, it is the driving of the car that is the potentially dangerous activity. My manual transmission keeps me engaged in driving. It’s just me, and that’s how I like it. I’m not forcing others to do anything.

I’ve always liked it, even when my mom had a Mustang II with a manual. I was taking it out and practicing.

You keep equating me with some Luddite who wants all things manual. That is not the case. Just my car and its transmission.

What are YOU talking about??

Oh, yeah, the thread topic.

Expectations are funny. How many consecutive months does it take to change expectations about the next 10 years?

My theory has been that if foreigners believe inflation is going to be high in the US, they will try to dump dollars and dollar denominated fixed income assets. That generates inflationary pressure because dollars that had been sitting still start moving around.

This is a vaguely related story https://www.politico.com/news/2021/07/19/china-buying-us-farms-foreign-purchase-499893

Untrue.
I want MY car to have a manual transmission. I do not trust the transmission to shift when I want to, and for every car I’ve had, they don’t. Especially on downshifting.
If you must know, I prefer electric windows (the crank is actually hazardous while driving, especially the rear ones!), A/C with a digital thermostat, cruise control that tells me what it’s set at (my current car does not do this), heated seats (I don’t have them, but my wife’s car does, good for colder days that we sometimes get), headlights that turn on automatically regardless of the time of day (my current car is Canadian-built and this feature is standard); a modern stereo system with a USB port that can read the iPod songs, artists, albums, and that I can search them in alphabetical order, or more importantly to plug an iPhone in to tell me directions through my stereo system (turning down the volume of whatever).
Yes, I want to push my own pedals (all three!). Turn the steering wheel, change lanes and turn when and how I want, turn on the wipers when I (not some robot) can’t see, as I have for over 40 years. Because I know how. I’m comfortable with it. Why try to take that away from me and everyone, as you recommend?
Heck, I once had a car with an automatic shoulder belt. Pretty cool, since it was a two-door, and passengers didn’t have to wrestle it to get in back.

Well, I have it on until I don’t need it, turn it off, accelerate around, turn it back on. But I have to turn it off BEFORE it starts to decelerate.
Royal pain, like my mom is braking for me.

OK, JSM, you have found your Luddite!
Yes, it would be a lot of hassle without those things. But, I told you how to do it and now you know how I do it.
Only nitpick: this new iPod has like half the storage reserved for shit I don’t want. Mainly, some health thing. Records data every time it moves. And, I can’t uninstall. And, I have more music than half the storage.

Hmm, maybe you’re right.

Also, pretty sure there is a machine that will “burn” a CD of your old cassettes. And, that someone owns one and will do that work.

I think my father in law has something to transfer stuff off of tapes. Not sure if it’s onto a cd or directly to the computer (or both).

Pot and Kettle imo.

You both want to stick to the old ways and hold back technological advancements because ya’ll are used to what you’re used to and scared of change.

Not good.

Actually the computer is pretty new. My prior computer had two CD-ROM drives. Current computer has zero. :woman_shrugging:

Untrue.

I said I didn’t mind the CVT, even though I dislike automatic transmission on a discretely geared vehicle for basically the exact same reason as DTNF, which it should be noted, had absolutely nothing to do with fear of change.

I like my adaptive cruise control.

I love my heated and ventilated seats. And I recently saw an ad for a Buick with massaging seats and now I’m thinking I should’ve held out for a car with that feature.

I just don’t think that Level 5 AV is going to be safe and useful to me anytime soon, and I don’t want the hassle of converting my music to a different technology. :woman_shrugging:

Actually… this computer might be sitting in my attic.

Also, there’s a vast gulf between fear and dislike. I’ve driven automatic transmission cars many MANY times and never once was afraid.

I guess the closest I came to fear of an automatic transmission was not wanting to take driver’s ed in an automatic. I knew I’d be taking the driving test in a manual and I was concerned about not having practice on the maneuverability test in the same type of vehicle I’d be taking the test in.

But that wasn’t fear of the automatic transmission… it was fear of failing the test. And the pressure was on because it was my turn to drive the carpool to the all-city choir rehearsal on the other side of town like 3 days after the test (had to wait a week between tests, or some interval longer than what I had anyway) and my father was NOT available to drive. I could use his car but I had to have my license to drive the carpool myself. It was me (a lowly sophomore) and 3 seniors and I just couldn’t let the seniors down. I had to pass that test the first time! I did pass it on the first try, but I spent a lot of extra time practicing the maneuverability in my father’s car, which wouldn’t have been necessary if they’d offered driver’s ed in a manual.

I learned to drive on a manual. I think manuals are more fun to drive, but a pain with stop and go traffic, especially with a melting down infant/toddler in the backseat.

Huh. I agree with Mike Pence. (And it sounds like a majority of both Democrats and Republicans too.)

In my early twenties I bought a manual transmission car specifically because I wanted to learn how to drive one. Loved it.

I tried to convince my wife to learn how to drive it after we got married, but at that point we lived in a place with a lot of hills in the city and it really wasn’t ideal for learning. Then the car died.

Yeah that’s not so fun.
