Improved health and lifestyle from quitting drinking

Did ChatGPT bypass the paywall? Interesting trick if so. WSJ is an annoying one to get around their paywall, my usual Reader Mode extension and (last I checked) 13ft.io don’t work.

Does AI give sources, or is it a basic “I (i.e., AI) read it on the internet, so it must be true” situation?

This seems quite important, if there are valid sources. No more, “I deserve a beer!” after a good hard workout.

I had read before that alcohol decreases muscle mass gain, though didn’t have any numbers or total certainty behind that. I believe it though.

In this instance, the source is what I gave it — the wsj article.

Here’s a quote directly from the article:

Ingesting alcohol immediately after training or competition can reduce the rate of muscle protein synthesis, or how we build muscle mass, by 37%, research shows.

That blue link will take you to a government website :tfh:

I just bought the Guinness 0. It’s chilling rn.

I saw the Partake sample 12 pack for $9.99 (50%off) but didn’t buy it. Maybe I’ll go and get it tomorrow to try now that I saw a few of you liked it

Wow. Tastes exactly like Guinness

I bought the partake sampler and the peach gose. Had the pale, ipa, and hazy ipa so far. I think the pale was my favorite of those three, need another round to verify, but they are definitely in the “buy again” column. 10-25 calories per can is just astounding.

I have to say i have been pleasantly surprised with the options available once i moved beyond what “athletic” had to offer. I have always really enjoyed craft beers, so it’s nice to enjoy a few in the usual situations Id say i would have made the switch years ago had i known this, but it seems like most of this has really just become available in the last year or two. Guinness 0 came to the US in '22 and blue moon NA last fall. The others seem relatively new as well, all <5 years, so probably little scale historically for national distribution.

I’m finding little reason to even want to go back to regular beer, even on a occasional basis. The NA options still need to make their way into bars and restaurants, that’s the biggest gap.

yup. a rail of craft taps and the only NA they have is bottled Heineken 0.0 (which I don’t mind).

it is close. I find all NA’s to have a slight sweetness to them (must be the alcohol bitters it out normally?). but the nitro can…it is excellent

I think it was mentioned in the wsj article that a large part of the NA market is actually regular drinkers. I normally cut myself off an hour before heading home from a beer night with the guys so I’d be fine driving home. Could have easily been another round or two of NA beers there instead of water. Or instead alternating in an NA for every other or every third beer depending on pace.

I also strayed away from the higher abv beers for several years now for similar reasons as even with a smaller pour, the total alcohol was higher.

Reinforcing this for the Partake ones. For something like 25 calories in their Peach Gose I expected watery crap but figured why not, when many of the N/A beers are more like 75. We were quite pleased.

I don’t remember what other Partakes were at the specialty store, but I plan to buy a 6-pack of each next visit (I don’t think they had a sampler).

As long as there is something beyond O’Douls. A brewery we do trivia at sometimes has begun serving kombucha, which I’m a-okay with. Reminds me I need to pull my current batch of kombucha - making banana bread flavor before the weather gets warm.

Partake at Target had the Pale, IPA, Hazy IP and Blonde variety, (plus other 6 packs). The reviews I see are saying these are all low cal and good to very good.

Looks like my local target and Walmart carry this.

Noted, only one of the many Targets in my metro area carries that brand so I might have to pick some up when I’m near that location

I also expected watery… i thought that about a lot of the NAs initially, so maybe im getting used to the difference, but i really did think… wow, this only has 10 calories! May not be the best beer i have ever had, but taste wise is way better than any light American lager.

It listed 4g carbs on the label… not sure how that works out to 10 calories at 4 calories per carb. Regardless, a lot of other NAs do come in around 75-110 calories which just seems like a lot lacking the alcohol calories, but i guess that really just translates into most regular beers are well over 200.

But 10 calories in a decent NA… that’s about as guilt free as you can get.

Probably 3.5g of carbs, which rounds to 4, but 14 calories rounds to 10? Just guessing.

Their blonde has 3g carbs and 15 calories. The IPA has 0g and 10 calories. I guess the residual alcohol could add a few calories, but none of it seems consistent. Mystery.

a bottle (11.2 fl oz) of Heineken 0 comes in at 69 calories which just seems…NOICE!

Black Butte NA (in the porter style) from Deschutes in Oregon. I had to check that i hadn’t actually picked up the loaded version by mistake because it’s that tasty!

Given that reporting to the nearest 5 or 10 calories depending on the total is permissible, this was 100% a choice.

Tried the peach gose from Partake. It is good! Actually tastes like a sour beer and is only 25 calories and 4g carbs. The other partake options at the specialty beer store were all IPA’s, ick. Like two or three different varieties of IPA.

…which means there’s probably ~1g of alcohol in it (7 calories).

The whole can is 355 ml, which is 355g, which means the alcohol content is 0.3%. Maybe they just assume 0.5% alcohol and assign calories based on that.

But if it really is 0.3% to 0.5% alcohol, it’s a little strange to me that if I chugged ten cans quickly, it would be like drinking a whole beer. I wonder if I would actually feel the effects of alcohol if I did that, or just a lot of bloating from the carbonation.
