I am going to buy this (these) today and reasons why

Humblebrags about being able to afford these heat bills. I had mine set to 67° and our last gas bill was $420.

That seems like a lot even with a gas range, gas dryer, and gas hot water heater. Although if you’ve got a large drafty house, and/or a bunch of people in the house who like to take long showers and/or a leaky hot water faucet somewhere…

I’m paying under $300 a month for gas and electric. In the winter that’s mostly going towards gas though. Summer it’s similar, but nearly all for electric. Spring & fall are nice because the bill goes down a lot.

That said I know there’s a high degree of regional variation though.

Gas heater, hot water heater, and range. House is 111 years old and drafty, furnace is 24 years old and not super efficient.

The basement area barely counts, doesn’t take much to heat a basement. We’ve about 2,600 sq ft or so above grade.

New HVAC is moving up the list. Won’t rebuild windows for another year or two.

ETA: my five year plan is to have solar, a heat pump with gas backup, and rebuilt original single pane windows with new wooden storms.

The draftiness is probably a bigger issue than the furnace. 1997 furnaces were still fairly efficient. But the most energy/efficient furnace in the world will still cost a lot if the heat it produces is winding up outside.

I don’t know diddly squat about how to seal up an older home to make it less drafty though.

It’s not terrible, mostly. I’ve done some things, need to do a few more. I can’t really fix the windows without having them rebuilt, and that’s my biggest problem. It’ll take about $25k to fix that.

I might do windows before HVAC but at 24 years old I’m on borrowed time there.

Well you certainly need to have enough set aside to replace it when it goes. I suppose in this day & age of back orders and such it’s a little riskier than normal.

What color are hers?

I keep ours at 68. My family complains sometimes and all I say is everyone here owns a sweatshirt. Put it on.

I keep my AC lower than 80. I hate it being that warm.

My boiler is from 1959. I was going to replace it this year, but after doing some research, decided to wait a little longer.

I bought a new battery and a new screen for my pixel 5, for more than $300. The new phones are just bigger than i like, and I’m hoping to nurse this one until Google makes a smaller phone again.

I wonder if I’d like one of those fancy folding numbers.

My (non-home) office is kept at a temperature every woman working around me finds SO COLD, they all bring in heated blankets/space heaters/full coats to keep their hands and feet from getting numb.

Personal heaters and heated blankets aren’t allowed, while personal fans are, but yeah let’s keep it below 70 year round - and it’s not a cost thing, because it’s even colder in the summer than it is in the winter.

The dad who pulled his card out to pay for that closet full of clothes is the same dad paying that electric bill cause you don’t want to wear them around the house :joy:

Fortunately the wife grew up with tightwad parents who had similar opinions on heat. Exception was when we were getting up a billion times a night with a baby. The thermostat was set wherever the person breastfeeding wanted it around the clock.
