I am going to buy this (these) today and reasons why

Northern California, sadly might be a bit over 6 hours from St. Louis.

Thinking of getting this. I don’t have room for a treadmill or exercise bike but this could work in my space.

A domino’s pizza. Dominos is certainly nothing to write home about, and for many years a Lg 1-topping pizza has been easily obtained for $7.99 with a coupon (code). Now thru March whenever I buy one they immediately email me a coupon for $3 off the next one, to be used within a week. So now it’s $4.99 x 1.07 = $5.34 and at that price i will be eating them every week…

2X1tb drives. I have to upgrade my ‘cloud’ storage server. We’re doing videos right now and that’s filling up space fast. It’s makes me a bit anxious when the server keeps spewing ‘you’re down to less than 10% space’ every day.

How about 30 TB?

it’s not how much you spend, it’s how much you saaaaaave

What year do you think it will be when 1 Petabyte hard drives are a normal, expected storage amount for a home PC? (1 Petabyte being the equivalent of 1024 TBs)

2035?
2040?
2045?

My prediction is Christmas of 2042.

1PB looks funny because it reminds me of Peanut Butter

Yeah, that’s more than I paid for an individual server.
that’s weird anyway. I can get a terrabyte for $100. so $3K for 30tb. They want $5KUSD for 30 on one drive.

Plus, I don’t need even a terrabyte. THe cloud just acts as common storage for our desktops/laptops (we’re set up so that nobody stores locally, all the data on everyone’s machine is accessed from the server). And we aren’t data intensive.
The only reason we’re going over right now is all the 3g videos I’ve been uploading.

That’s just another day at work on our virtual machines. It drives me crazy. “OK, I’ll add another 5GB for you”

The supercomputing facility at the University of IL had servers so large that “petabyte” would be the convenient unit to refer to its capacity. However, it’s being decommissioned.

But to answer the question presented, I will say that by 2027, hard drives in the Pb size will be available (but expensive) . . . but the problem of it being mainstream is going to also rely on having the operating system capable of handling a drive that size.

In the 90’s, that was handled by creating virtual partitions on the drive (so a single, large, physical hard drive would have drives C:, D:, E:, and F:, for example).

But I really doubt that home PC’s will find a demand for “on-site” storage with current cloud technology.

True story. I used to live there. Really.

Yeah, I’ve traded convenience for privacy and arguably security. Adding 5g involves a drive to Toronto for me. Which is what I’ll be doing on Sunday.

My mentors complain to me that I’m not using AWS or similiar. It’s so easy, and it’s so fast. Which is true, except my stuff is as fast, if not faster. Easy? Well, generally this stuff runs on my servers for a year or two, sometimes longer, before I have to go in.
A year or two ago I went into the data center and they had to issue me a new card because it’d been more than two years since I’d been in. So it’s not like I spend a lot of time there anymore.

I might buy a grill this weekend. I am thinking a Weber Performer. We will see if I have the nerve to pull the trigger.

Looking at small chainsaws. I’m thinking of moving to Ryobi 18V electrics. It looks like I can slowly replace the majority of my lawn and garden tools with that line so hopefully one day I’ll have only a couple of batteries for my cordless tools. Right now I have way too many. I would love to just go with Bosch because i have a couple drills, circular saw, and a few others in the line all using the véame battery type but it doesn’t look like they make a chainsaw.

$349 at Ace. $549 at Costco (though that might be internet and thus include delivery).

Its good imo to.stick to one brand. All my stuff is dewalt, down to my lawnmower.
If youre not going electric, go with a stihl saw. Not cheap, but really good chainsaws.

I figured two chainsaws were better than one chainsaw until i was cutting wood and ended up with two broken saws. Havent broken down since i went with stihl.

Might be a bit much for the average homeowner though.

I definitely want electric. My Bosch tools are relatively new but it was more of an impulse purchase bc there was a good deal on a set. They seem to be getting the job done so I was planning to stick with them.

I’m also looking for middle of the road pricing. I’m in a house where I don’t plan on doing much work myself so I don’t need professional quality tools, but I do enough I want something decent without breaking the bank. The one thing lacking in the Ryobi 18V line is the lawn mower. Someone else cuts 75% of my lawn at this point and my gas mower should be around for a bit, so Im not too concerned.

I recently spent >$5k (total, not per) on frames for 2 oil paintings we have. One will be in my office and the other will be hung at home.

Damn frames are expensive. But the one for my office (technically 3 different frames set in one another) really takes the painting up a level. It took one of my wife’s paintings that she didn’t really like, and didn’t want me having in my office, to one she feels better about.

ETA: this is based on when we picked out the frames. I still have a couple weeks before they are supposed to be ready. And posting this made me realize I’m actually excited to see the finished product.

The cheaper one at Ace is not the same one as the the $549 at other places. More expensive grill gets bigger table, timer, and gas charcoal starter. Which I opted for.

Seems right. I couldn’t tell from the pics.
