I am going to buy this (these) today and reasons why

Oh and I looked at Macy’s and about had a heart attack when I saw the prices. We can afford it, but

Costco was $59.99 per set for 680 count Pima cotton sheets with an extra pillowcase in each set. I’m not sure if Pima cotton is better than other cotton, but they thought it was worth mentioning, so maybe??? Just plain white sheets but whatever. Hopefully the quilts will be pretty. Quilts come with matching shams. I might need to buy more pillows.

Not a super fantastic price, but not highway robbery either. No natural fiber sheets at Macy’s were under $120.

I’m pretty happy with the kirkland signature sheets.

I found these two at a new place in town called US Food Chef’Store. Oh man. They are wild sharp. Already cut my finger. Acero from yermany

All right! Looks like a paring knife and a ~6” chef’s knife? Great place to start, imo. Make sure to get a sharpener, for years I just used the $20 Wusthof thing in the pic below, I think I got it free with some other purchase. It didn’t seem to get them quite as they came new but did a good job.

Whetstones or bust!

I cheated and got a Chef’s Choice electric sharpener. I do have some whetstones that I inherited from my father, I haven’t attempted to use them.

Could definitely just be me, but whetstone sharpening is one of those things that leaves me oddly satisfied afterwards.

I took my cousin, who is a professional chef and has a degree in culinary arts, knife shopping with me and he recommended the Chef’s Choice. He said that while professional chefs use a sharpening steel, for amateurs like me we’ll likely get a better result with the electric sharpener. So on his advice that’s what I bought.

I mean, I run them across the steel every time I use them. But I am definitely an amateur and appreciate how idiot-proof the electric sharpener is.

Oh yeah, for that sweet sweet finish.

That’s good to know…I have a Chef’s Choice as well.

I barely qualify as an amateur cook. There’s nwih that I am any where near the skill of a professional knife-user..

Most definitely. At times, however, it seems I aspire to be a “better idiot”.

The steel doesnt sharpen so much as straighten the edge restoring the sharpness.
Wetstones, electric and manual sharpeners actually remove material so it sharpens. Wetstones are good for restoring, because you can remove dings and chips from the blade.otherwise, electric is fine

So you dont need to sharpen other than rarely. Most times just using steel will restore sharpness. Once the steel doesnt make the knife sharp, then you fall back to wetstone/sharpener.

Holy! $150+! That’s the Harley Davidson of electric sharpeners though.
I’ll save my pennies

hmmm…inflation…it was $130 when I bought this one 15+ years ago.

Pro tip: lots of folks buy these and don’t seem to use them. I got mine (in chrome!) on eBay for like $45. It’s older but in amazing condition, with box and manual.

I can’t recall what I paid for mine circa 2006, but I thought it was under $100. :woman_shrugging:

bought a $1/week subscription to the digital-only edition of the New York Times for the first year. Specifically now so I can read the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling and annotations. That’s probably worth 30 bucks to me right now, so having access to the rest of the articles (which I’m continually running into the paywall for) is gravy. Likely I’ll cancel sometime around August of next year, when I finally realize I’m paying 17 bucks a month.

I bought a dress form today (like a mannequin thing that you construct clothes on) because in a rather risky, manic move - and only a couple of weeks prior to my wedding - I decided to buy a sewing machine to construct two kid’s bridesmaid dresses from scratch (and succeeded, without looking anything up). I figure I can bang out some rad shit if I use a form that fits my size.

Unfortunately my size is so stupid that I only fit the boob size of a small form, and the hip size of the medium form. I got the medium - I guess I need to stuff.
