How safe will you feel when vaccinated?

It’s scheduled. TBD if it happens.

I did in person assessment grading a couple weekends ago, too.

They still have a virtual option, for both.

Stepson tested positive with at home test, getting another test tomorrow. He’s at his mom’s right now.

We have two foster kids here, both fully unvaxxed, one potentially high risk (he is on the bigger side) and I don’t love the idea of exposing them (bio son has tested negative). But my husband says it’s not right to not allow his son to come over just because he is sick. Tomorrow is our day per the custody arrangement and his mom has offered to keep him there.

I don’t know what to do. If he comes over here, we will have to notify our agency of a positive test and tell one of the kids’ families who is supposed to get them for thanksgiving. It’s such a cluster and feels so irresponsible. But also, there is a good chance everyone here has already been exposed, since stepson was over here Saturday.

keep him at his moms. this doesn’t even seem like it should be a question.

if they were all potentially exposed saturday, why didn’t you get the foster kids tested?

This has all literally happened in the last 30 minutes and the foster kid is going to the doctor’s tomorrow. The other foster kid who is only here for a few days got here an hour before all of this went down. Our agency’s response is “meh, shit happens, call us if you have an official positive result.”

Oh also, pretty sure foster kid #1 is the one who brought covid here. He had diarrhea and a runny nose and cough when he came to us. The placement agency said they don’t do covid tests for placements because the kids are being placed no matter what and it’s a fact of life now. He is getting tested tomorrow.

ah, that might change things. so step son likely got it from foster kid and everyone’s been exposed already.

are you and your husband getting tested?

If stepson or foster son results come back positive we will get official tests and also go buy more at home tests and take those (which we will probably do regardless).

Rapid test appointments are next to impossible to find here due to thanksgiving. So all I can find is PCR. Won’t get those results until Friday, I expect.

Not sure what will happen with the kid who is here for respite. Do we keep him for two weeks to quarantine? He can’t go to school anyway if he gets sick. Where would he go if his foster family doesn’t want them exposed, which I wouldn’t blame them for? It’s a cluster.

what do you mean “if” for stepson? didn’t he already test positive?

yeah, seems like you should keep him for 2 weeks.

sorry about the mess you’re going through. :frowning: bright side is, you’re vaccinated, and kids will likely be just fine with covid and hopefully just a big annoyance.

Stepson’s mom is second guessing if she did the test right (she might not have it kept it flat, etc). I’m going to assume it’s positive but she thinks it’s a false positive (very unlikely) and is taking him to get tested tomorrow. Sigh. I don’t know. It’s a whole thing with her.

ah dunno, never took one of those at home tests. i have one sitting here cause i was feeling covidy a few weeks ago. then i just decided i was being stupid and didn’t take it.

Neighbors gave us an at home test and I tested foster son. Negative. Now I don’t know what to think…

The test still has another 8 minutes to go so maybe it will turn positive.

hmmmm, if everyone in your house is negative, absolutely keep step son with his mom imo.

Yeah that’s what I think is best but my husband is treating me like I am evil for even suggesting it.

the vaccine isn’t even 100%. you could get sick as could your husband. his mother has already been exposed. this just seems like common sense to me. he can spend more time at your house when he’s negative.

That seems incredibly selfish of your husband.

An extreme take:
To me this seems like it would be considered a deliberate action that is putting the foster children at risk and would bring into question the fitness of your household for foster care.

I admit that it is extreme, but it really seems inappropriate and a violation of the trust given to your household.

But, I could be completely wrong and it could be quite common in this world to have foster parents expose foster kids to a deadly illness.

Real take:

This fucking sucks and I hope your husband can realize the risk

i’m not sure selfish is the right word here. irresponsible for sure.

I called the agency back and told them we had an official positive result because another at home test also came back positive.

They said whatever, the kid who is with us who was maybe not even exposed will just have to quarantine AFTER he goes back to his foster home and they have nowhere else to move him, and they also said that there is no reason our son shouldn’t be living in our house as normal…

That’s how f**ked up the system is.

The good news: I have managed to convince my husband to have stepson stay with his mom for a few more days at least. He mentioned separately how many people will be dead by Christmas with how lazy people are being and I told him one of those dead people could be someone we exposed and that did convince him.

He takes covid very seriously. He also takes coparenting very seriously and has a really hard time with situations where he can’t treat our kids equally. I think that overpowered him for a bit, but he was able to be reasoned with. Divorce averted.

False positives with the at-home tests are extremely rare. Someone I know tested positive today with an at-home test. They didn’t believe it (because they were vaxxed & had been “so careful”), so they went to urgent care to confirm & they didn’t even get re-tested.

The urgent care doc said they trust a positive at-home test but they’ll retest someone with covid-like symptoms who gets a negative at-home test because false negatives are pretty common (I think due in part to test sensitivity & part to user error).

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I hope everyone has mild (or even no) symptoms & quick recovery.
