Coughing and hacking around the office.
In bed for a few days.
Was out of work for two weeks.
Not hospitalized
Infected a few people in the office.
That’s a risk I’m willing to accept
That currently isn’t.
nothing pisses people off like being sick as the office. This was true before covid…
And at this point EVERYONE should have WFH capabilities if they are an office worker. Its not like in the old days where you felt bad because they would have to use sick days/PTO to stay home. If anyone here said ‘wfh due to illness’ they would get zero pushback on that front.

unrelated, but funny:
my wife’s friend is trying to claim she got shingles from the covid vaccine. I dont really care, she is just blablabla to me. But then she sent a published medical journal entry to me to prove it was a thing.
however, the medical study she sent me concluded… there is no link between the covid vaccine and shingles.
So I guess an effective anti-vax strategy is to site credible sources, but just hope no one actually reads your sources.

Pre-pandemic (so 18 months ago) there were still actuarial managers in my company who would not allow working from home, although everyone had laptops. (By not allowing it I mean the managers would deny their requests to get the correct wfh apps/software on their computers.) There would be students rotating into my department that were shocked that we would let them work from home when they were sick or if there was going to be a snowstorm or god forbid they had a plumber coming over between the hours of 10 to 4.

I know the type. Managers that want to see bodies at the office. oldschool repressive culture.
We had some managers in other departments that didnt allow students to use study time at home, so they had to come in and study at their desk… to prove they were not abusing study time?

Wow, I haven’t seen anyone reject a work-from-home request due to illness, snowstorms, or a plumber coming over in more than a decade. What kind of idiots are these managers? Or do they just work for places that had really horrible WFH capability?
Wife works at a construction company, at their main office. WFH is highly frowned upon and has to be approved by an executive. She has worked from home fewer than 10 days since the pandemic started.
The person in question is the South Dakota/southern Minnesota regional site manager. So, he spends 90% of his time at jobsites. So, he was out of work for two weeks for illness. I doubt he bothered quarantining once his symptoms were gone, based on the general attitude at the company.
WFH due to inclimate weather was pretty rare at my company prior to the pandemic, despite the obvious risk here in Minnesota
I worked in a pension shop once upon a time…
WFH setups allowed, but the expectation was to allow nights and weekend hours.
Well, it only takes a few (or one?) student who did work-hours study time at home and got a 0 on the exam to suspect shenanigans. bad apple spoiling the whole bunch, girl… I say, give it one more try…
This did happen. we had an FSA exam taker take the full study time (about 2 full weeks). They showed up for the exam, but then left as soon as permitted…and did not return for the afternoon, scoring a zero. A few others from the company were at the sitting and noticed.
Turns out they were committed to career ASA and thought they would take an extra 2 weeks pto.
but this is certainly the rare case.
Why didn’t I ever think of that?

I am counting on my kids getting vaccinated soon. I just booked my first flight since 2019, central grading in New Orleans in five weeks.
Looking forward to it. Never done the NOLA thing before. I don’t drink and I don’t eat carbs and I would rather sleep than go out, but I like meeting other actuaries and seeing new places.
they have grading in person again? i’m a little surprised by that.
