Happy Thoughts

Met a friend for dinner tonight at the restaurant of a woman whose taxes I did. She remembered me and gave me a free dessert. Which I wouldn’t have ordered (and tried to decline) but was quite delicious.

But I couldn’t understand what she said it was. Peruvian place and I am not familiar with Peruvian desserts.

Some kind of crumbly sandwich cookie with a jelly-like filling and powdered sugar on top. That’s not normally something I’d go for, but this was surprisingly good.

The picture in the thumbnail is an Argentinian version. You described what they are like in Peru

In Peru they are usually filled with manjar blanco, which is very similar to dulce de leche.

Yes! The picture of the Peruvian ones looks just like what I had. SO good!!!

I took three university students fishing yesterday. Had a scream, laughed all day. Two of them were of Asian descent and one was polish. Two things that came out of that. First we kept a bunch of sunfish because they’d eat them. We (since I represent western civilization) would just throw them back even though I suspect they’re delicious being in the Sam family as perch and crappy. Second, I had to learn how to clean a fish whole instead of filleting them like A white guy.

All in all a success. One of the students posted this pic, and said the fish were delicious.

Next week is going to be crazy as I’m taking 5 students on a fishing charter. Expecting some big fish.

The other result is that I’ve agreed to take some students swimming in the middle of a lake. I’m thinking I’ll take them to potahawk island in like Erie.later this summer.

Interesting. Back where I grew up (MN/WI) sunnies were a popular fish to catch & keep.

In NC, we (as teens or younger) kept and ate some that now I fell were certainly too small to be worth cleaning/eating.

It’s one of the fun things about taking these random folks out. Most of them are either international, or first gen. So I get exposed to a lot of different cultures. And they get exposed to mine. Most of them have never been hunting or in a culture where hunting is even possible. Same with fishing, or eating moose and squirrel, etc. The whole outdoors thing isn’t possible in a lot of places.
I’d probably try sunfish, but I do not think my spouse will cook it. Not sure if I’d try eating the eyeballs though. Apparently grandma always says eating the eyeballs makes you see better. Yeah, with my grandmother that was carrots.

I just stumbled across a clarinetist/vocalist named Chloe Feoranzo. She’s pretty awesome.

…the stumble was because she appeared with three of the other members of Tuba Skinny. I’ve been watching a LOT of their videos lately…I’d like to make a trip to New Orleans to hear them in person.

Ran into a fraternity brother on the street in Boston today! Haven’t really seen him in probably 20 years, except for the one and only reunion I went to but we didn’t chat then. We are both halfway across the country for work stuff, and he was just coming out of a restaurant with some of his colleagues and I recognized him on the street (and vice versa). Had a good chat to catch up. Very cool.

Mr. NA passed his motorcycle test today!

Wait, has he been out there breakin’ the law until now?

How else are he & NA supposed to get to Arnold’s for dinner?

Haha no, he has had his permit until now.

I still haven’t gotten my license, just have been reupping my permit. Someday I’ll get the actual license.

I didn’t know you could extend a permit. I broke the law for a few years in HS and college and finally got my Class M when I was 20.

Not sure what laws in other states are, but in Ohio you can ride a motorcycle and never get a license as long as you keep taking the permit test each year. You’re not allowed to ride on freeways, with passengers, without a helmet, or at night if you don’t have the endorsement, but I don’t do any of those things anyway.

Why not just take the test?

I’d have to schedule it, practice for it, take a day to go get a new license, etc, just to have no changes to how I already ride. This works fine for me for now…eventually the one hour a year I have to commit to it will become a bigger time suck than the time I could have just invested in passing the test, but it’s fine for right now.

I can also take a two-day motorcycle course to bypass the test - they go through motorcycle riding for beginners. THAT I might actually take, because I don’t know how to ride a real motorcycle, just a scooter, and I’d like to learn some practical things there, but…meh. I’m not overly motivated right now.

Most of my friends w scooters stay on a revolving series of permits. The class is worthwhile they said (those who took it).
