I sometimes get some interesting communications from the students I take fishing.
I think I figured out why. I think it’s because they’re comfortable with me, so they’ll text me or send me pictures that they wouldn’t otherwise. if that’s the case…well, good.

My website seems to have just started ranking in Bing. That’s not a crazy big deal, but in the last 3-4 days it just started sending me paying customers. Not setting the world on fire, but it’s about 100% better than nothing. Normally when I turn my advertising off, my world goes silent. Over the weekend I’ve been getting dribbles of traffic. Cool, very cool.
I recall the heady days when i was #1 in Google for all the big money terms from about 2006 to 2019. I shudder at how much business I wasted just because I had a firehose of volume.

Relevant, I’ve cooked up a plan to get ranked in Google. In amongst studying for actuarial exams, I’m going to be doing an actuarial research project on some historical reserves. That project will hopefully give my website the kick it needs to get ranked.

I go to the local convenience store from time to time if I just need a gallon of milk or whatever, maybe I want some junk food that night.
A brother and sister work there and they are super nice and some days I chat them up a bit. Last week I was in there and both were working, and they were discussing BBQ when I rolled in. So I said hey, I am making 13lb of pulled pork on Friday, want me to bring you a pound? Sure. So I did that on Monday.
I went in tonight for milk and the brother was working and he told me that her debit card got shut off and he didn’t have any money, and they were planning on just plain rice for dinner Monday night. And with the pulled pork they actually had a really great meal.
It was pretty humbling, and a reminder that it never hurts to be nice.

Who is ‘they’ in that question? The brother and sister at the store? Mathman should ask them next time he’s in there. They might have an opinion.

OK, I realize that’s not an Irish flag, but it doesn’t appear one is available.
Anyway, I officially have Irish citizenship now. Next project is an Irish passport.

That was much faster than the wait for Canadian citizenship. The number of applications (mostly Americans) since the criterion was expanded to include any Canadian ancestor has skyrocketed. Probably will take a few years to clear the backlog.
