Happy Thoughts

Pleased to see my favourite nephew speaking out against low immunization rates.

It is so frustrating for my nephew to listen to parents saying they read something on the internet and that is why their kids are not vaccinated. The parents can be the biggest challenge for a pediatrician.

Got a letter from prior employer regarding prior pension benefits, looked like a scam
Black and white, website not HTTPS…

So, to be sure I go to the company’s website and call customer service, then another number then another number (that matched the number on the letter), 45 minutes later, of them checking me out and me still being a bit scam paranoid, I realize I didn’t clean out that account like I thought and I am due around $700 a month.

I guess some department is there to track people down, as I never updated my addresses with them.

I seem to be well liked at work, as a person and not just a colleague, with people beyond my team. This is a nice feeling.

I’ve been informed that we have won the award from the Lawrence Preservation Alliance. They give out just a handful each year so it’s pretty cool! They will run a story on us in the quarterly newsletter and put a sign in our yard.

Oh, and there is an estate sale brewing next door, our neighbor is 92 and has moved to assisted living. Which is sad, he was quite the guy. The guy managing the estate sale is a riot, he let me in early to look, got an old bird bath for my wife’s birthday. It’s a neat piece, at a glance it has to be 50+ years old and has a nice patina.

I have been retired for over 15 years but my current part-time gig includes a couple of out of town pension or investment conferences each year. I am an early riser and always ready for coffee well before the official breakfast time. The lovely hotel I am staying at today sets up fresh-brewed coffee really early in the morning and nothing beats grabbing a free fresh coffee and muffin and watching the sunrise over the beautiful harbour here (in Victoria).

Also happy to see former colleagues and meet new pension professionals at these meeting. Conferences were always the best part of work for me.

Our 92 year old neighbour moved to a seniors’ home two years ago after his wife’s death and the house was sold to a developer. It will soon be a construction site. Hope you are luckier with your new neighbours!

This house will be sold, it almost certainly will not be torn down, old homes here are prized and the land isn’t that valuable. It’s a ca 1910 craftsman bungalow. It’s really solid, the oak trim/casings have not been painted, the plaster needs some TLC but it’s all there. The dining room has the nice oak box beams on the ceiling and a built-in cabinet topped by stained glass windows. Foundation looks good. There will be construction, I bet the next owners will redo the kitchen and baths, which are very dated.

Some homes do get flipped here, I hope it isn’t bought by a flipper who throws down LVP in the kitchen and paints it all white and grey. One home we tried to buy (long story) was an ~1880 italianate, they painted it gray, installed $30 Home Depot lights all over, and tore out the windows, including the stained glass window on the staircase landing. I threw up in my mouth when I saw it.

I like to get library cards at reciprocal libraries. Today is a beautiful, sunny day, so my older son and I walked on the ferry, I got a library card on the other side, and then we had lunch before heading back.

As I started reading this, I immediately thought of Ted Lasso. Smiled when I saw who wrote it.
