Happy Thoughts

Uh…wut?

We can get discounts on our health insurance premiums by either demonstrating health (blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, fasting glucose, etc), or demonstrating commitment to lifestyle changes if those metrics aren’t met (coaching, weight loss year over year).

Probably a very American thing.

yup. my company didn’t require you to land in any ranges - just that you participated. it has since abandoned the biometric thing.

Yeah, I’ve never even heard of only getting the discount if you meet certain health requirements. The only exception I can think of is higher premiums if you are a non-tobacco user.

It’s not mandatory, so lots of people don’t do it. I can save $20 a paycheck on my premiums, plus an extra $260 contribution to my HSA from my employer, plus my spouse can also do it and save me another $20 a paycheck on premiums. That’s a $1,300 value - almost enough for my kid’s Roblox addiction!

$1.3k…thats pretty good.

Thats still in its infancy in the UK so the savings are much smaller.

To be clear, you only get/save this $1,300 if you and Mr N.A. are healthy? (by some definition of healthy)

I’ve seen ones where it’s like if I get a mammogram and complete a health survey then I get the HSA contributions and/or discount. But I can be fat and have breast cancer and I still get it. I just have to do the things. There was like a list of 10 health activities and you just had to do two or something. But screenings… not falling into healthy ranges.

If only healthy people get the benefits that seems like it has the potential to be discriminatory.

No, you don’t have to be healthy, but if you are healthy, you are exempt from the other requirements. So for example, if you have any of the criteria fall out of the range, you can achieve the credit by having a few calls with a health coach, enroll in a self-paced online coaching program, or download one of the official apps and going through one of those programs. Nothing terribly time-consuming, and you can pick the program you want to do. They have ones that focus on healthful eating, or diagnosis management, or sleep/anxiety regulation, etc.

Also, the ranges are not too strict. The BMI cutoff is 30, so if you are overweight, you are exempt, but if you are obese, you are not. Same for cholesterol, you can have an LDL up to 160 before they require coaching, even though the ideal range is less than 100.

Also, an annual health survey is also required regardless, including tobacco use attestation, but if you say you never sleep 8 hours a night and your anxiety is through the roof, you don’t get penalized for it - just have to complete it.

Yeah i wouldnt know anything about that lol.
You americans are funny.

After seven weeks, we now have a functional dryer! No more stiff towels and underwear and clothes hanging from the doorways and curtain rods.

My London daughter is visiting for a few weeks. Warms my heart to see my daughters reconnecting but more fun watching their toddlers playing together.

Yeah, the attention certainly moves to the grandkids. I make an effort to remind my daughter when she visits that ‘you’re still my daughter’.
Then I also like to throw in that out of all my kids, she’s definitely top two.

Back in the day, we used to get together after Christmas to play Wii bowling (it was colloquially referred to as “Wii-piphany”). Everyone got a “prize” based on their total score . Mine was for being “most median”.

With all the bad news here about tariffs it was good to hear that this company from my home town should survive by focusing on the Canadian marketplace.

The Sprague family has run their eponymous company for five generations. The current CEO was one of my brother’s best high school students. The canning industry was almost wiped out in our area after the initial US-Canada trade deal as those factories were branch plants of US companies and production was moved to the larger US facilities. Sprague was the only survivor as they produced a very high end product. Their canned beans are heavenly: well worth the premium.

Just happy to see they are likely to survive as they have provided local employment for 100 years.

Only an hour’s wait at the department of licensing to get my son’s enhanced license and upgrading mine to an enhanced one. Someone who went yesterday said there were 3 hour waits.

Also, I was expecting a much bigger jump in our premiums when I converting him from a permitted driver to a licensed one, so that’s another happy thought.
