There are a lot of rattlesnakes in the Sonoran desert, but we didn’t see any. I’m sure this is not venomous based on head size and shape compared to native venomous snakes.
I’m mostly sure it’s a coachwhip, but I wanted other opinions.

My first guess would be rat snake, second choice king snake. Yes, I would certainly think nonvenomous, even though the majority of pics on Facebook from western deserts are some type of rattlesnake (including sidewinders, of course).
By the way, been listening to an audiobook (“Ugly Duckling” by Iris Johansen), where there is apparent agreement that coral snakes are often confused with milk snakes. I didn’t think so, but can’t remember what coral snakes are confused with. Some kind of king snake, maybe. (Book directly did have a variation of the "red and yellow, kill a fellow; red and black, nice to Jack, which is correct, but I didn’t associate ether red or yellow with milk snakes. Would Google if I cared more.
King snake was my second most likely guess, as they are in that area and are dark colored. IMO they do often have some markings/pattern you can spot, where this snake appeared almost completely black. While coachwhips are often some shade of brown, apparently in the Sonoran desert they are usually black.
My source:
This is a facebook Snake Identification group I see a lot
It’s a public group. I haven’t joined it, and won’t, but it shows up a lot. Group says it has 10+ posts a day. I also see posts from state-specific or region-specific snake identification groups (none of which I have joined).
My very rough impression is that the majority of non-venomous posts I see are of rat snakes, but that might be because there is a group for just rat snake pictures. I pay little attention to the source of snake pictures (some, don’t know how many, are groups just for snakes from Africa)
There is also a sub-Reddit called r/whatisthissnake. Yes, there truly is a sub for everything.
iNaturalist.org is a great site.
There really is. Once in a while there. Are threads where people post odd subs. It’s. Always wild to see what’s out there. There was a recent one where someone mentioned subs for methheads and there where three separate subs. I visited one, didn’t need to see the other two lol.
Two big scores on the amazon review program this morning. A high end 850 dollar rowing machineq. And a little brush gadget to clean the tracks on windows - something my spouse complains about every time the windows are cleaned.
I don’t have any meetings today. I don’t know how this happened, I bet I haven’t had a meeting-free day in about ten years.
DNGAFF?
I do have one thing that has to get done today, I think it’ll take me 2-3 hours. And then I have a pile of other work that is important but less urgent. After dealing with several fires earlier in the week I kind of need a slow day.
Mailed in my Menard’s rebate form. $69 cash back on the ceiling fans for the porch.
My son says that’s the best number. Thankfully he does not know why.
My husband lost our car keys at a place that is literally an old giant box store converted into dozens of small dark rooms that are funky cool interactive art exhibits (Otherworld, for those interested, it’s worth a visit if you find yourself in central Ohio). Fortunately someone had found them and turned them in to the front desk. It would have been terrible trying to track them down in there. Oh and also, it’s the only air tag battery we hadn’t replaced.
does he have a smart phone? or friends w a phone?
tl;dr
