Gun Violence in America

Rookie mistake. Always pretend you’re on the same side until they hand over all the weapons. Then you double cross them (with a slight smirk doing your best Alan Rickman impression).

Seems to me that the bird was rather smart knowing that to stay on the ground was far safer.

But agree that “hunting” should be done right where the animal has a reasonable chance of survival.

Well, I’ll be in a Tesla next week, in Denver, using Supercharging. Yikes.

Sounds like a charged situation. I like the added detail that witnesses say they saw the suspect drive away from the scene in a Tesla - we kinda figured that.

Har.

Exactly one har.

I was on foot less than a mile from this today.

When it happened or just generally today?

It’s really feels like “close to home” is no longer a matter of if, but when, for all of us.

Same general time frame, say noon to two. Didn’t find out until I got home.

This is going to be a very interesting case in terms of the surveillance state. Some newer technologies enabled this rapid identification and arrest.

Reminds me of Cheney with his “hunting” accident.

Wasn’t he there with his mother at the time? I assumed he was identified right away.

A little bit of that, but also the part where the gun cult has been proclaiming for years that these shootings are extremely rare events the media obsesses over. So it’s more the thought of when will a shooting affect my life in some way? In some ways, it is already happening. My kids prepare for active shooters at school. When I’m at Costco or the grocery store and see things like emergency exits, i mentally note them in case there is an active shooter.

This looks like a good list for those types of shootings. Around 100 dead, another 100 injured in the last 12 months, but also, how many more were present, heard gun shots, witnessed some being shot, or lying dead, or hid for an hour in fear? What about the family members waiting to hear from loved ones?

So how many lives are being affected? 100 people present for every victim, and for each person present, 10 friends and family frantically waiting to hear when they are safe? 100k in the last year within that circle? When do the numbers start to get real?

That part was quick. I was referring more to how they spotted his movements via technology: found him stealing the car on camera, tracked his movements via license plate cameras, then identified it was him behind the wheel via cameras.

I heard a bit of that this morning…interesting indeed.

I agree with all of this. I just saw an opening for a funny quote and went for it.

My central city just started a pilot program for injured survivors of gun violence. Why? Part of the reason is to prevent future gun violence. In the radio interview program official said a recent study showed 5 year survival rate post-gun injury is 80%. 20% chance of being dead within 5 years. 40% chance of hospital admission for another GSW in the next 5 years (not sure if those 20/40 are exclusive outcomes or not).

My small town just purchased an armored vehicle for something like $400k. Rationale was it would be needed for an active shooter.

Over the past 20 years and likely longer there hasn’t been a mass shooting here. Closest was a guy barricaded himself in a house and took a few potshots at police, who just waited him out.

Although in modern times, who knows, maybe it really will be helpful.

(Did I mention my town also has a homelessness crisis and subpar access to healthcare?)

Maybe the homeless can sleep in the truck when not in use.
