I’ve seen on republican.reddit.com an increasing frequency of calls to just shut the government down and let the economy collapse, I assume “to own the libs.”
There’s definitely a strong contingent of people who want the government to be gridlocked to the point of doing nothing.
I don’t care if Congress itself is gridlocked enough to make it difficult for either side to pass legislation. I do care a lot if they are moronic enough to let that result in a government shutdown.
Putting this here b/c I’d rather not have the main Israel - Hamas thread get too partisan.
McCarthy has said that the rumors that he will resign from Congress early are unfounded, and he is willing to renege on his promise not to run for Speaker again should the Republicans decide they need his sage leadership. And to demonstrate that leadership, he has a plan:
What are you going to do after Hamas says no? That’s the hard part that a plan needs to address.
“Be there for Israel” sounds like we’ll send them Hallmark cards. Would be nice if the Senate would confirm the nominee for ambassador, can you give Rand Paul a nudge?
Russia supports Hamas too. Why focus on just Iran?
More vagueness.
I agree 100%. Let’s start with condemning all House members who believe in Jewish space-laser conspiracies, and Presidential candidates who make anti-semitic social media posts on religious holidays.
Why, yes - that’s been a smashing good plan since we decided in 1953 to overthrow the duly elected government and have a number of people executed for the unforgivable crime of making sure Western oil companies were paying the royalties they were supposed to [and weren’t], and we put the Shah of Iran back in place so those companies could continue pumping oil out for free while the Shah - who was already despised by the citizens of Iran - brutally repressed the fucking shit out of citizens until they finally rose up in 1979 and overthrew him.
All of which, we’ve never apologized for and at most have tried the “let’s just move forward” thing, like everyone is supposed to be cool about that.
Can’t imagine why Iran might hate our fucking guts. I’m sure confronting it again will be just as much of a success.
After what Trump did with the JCPOA, they 100% do not trust anything the US says now.
Thats why they kind of turned towards Russia and China a bit more. Killing Soilemani and adding further sanctions to Iran just further cemented this shift.
There is no chance now of finding some common ground with Iran.
Scalise wins close Republican nomination. Will come to floor vote. Unclear if there are enough Rs who won’t support Scalise to torpedo his Speakership but my guess is after a round or two of voting at most they will fall in line behind him to avoid further party embarrassment but who can say with the clown show that is house republicans.
It’s going to be awesome to see the dysfunction on the first few votes.
Looks like a procedural step: they’re going to come in, come to order, then recess. Cause, there’s no surer way to say “Congress is broken, I’m not the problem - send me back to Washington, I’ll fix this” than time-wasting crap like this.
You know, until holdouts still won’t vote for Scalise and Jordan gives a smooth, slow knife in the back to Scalise and “volunteers” to be the nominee.
I see they have indicated no vote now. That is probably because they are still trying to shore up enough votes behind Scalise so we don’t see the same circus from last time.
There are currently 2 vacancies, so you need 217 votes to become speaker. There are 221 Republicans in the house. Ken Buck has said he won’t vote for someone who won’t acknowledge that Biden won the election, leaving 220. Not sure where that leaves things. Gaetz has said he’ll support Scalise, Boebert has said she won’t.
Interesting that Gaetz has said he’ll support Scalise. Guess we’ll find out soon enough what’s in it for him.
If there’s still the “one vote needed to vacate” rule, I guess we’ll find out soon enough if Scalise can outlast McCarthy.
Also means Trump, who really wants to be seen as a kingmaker and backed Jordan, will have egg on his face yet again and people like Chip Roy who are “Trump said ______, everyone needs to follow him” are going to have to decide who they’re going to betray.
My impression is that the Gaetz McCarthy feud was personal. It wouldn’t surprise me if Gaetz had the attitude that anyone in the GOP but McCarthy is fine
Yeah, but there are Republicans who bought into the McCarthy hate and are seeing Scalise as McCarthy 2.0 so it may be tough to put the genie back in the bottle for Republicans.
I expect they will eventually get behind Scalise after some promises that may or may not be kept just like they did to finally elect McCarthy the first time.
Though i suspect whatever coalition they put together will be about as functional as the McCarthy era speakership.
Nancy Mace told CNN that she will vote for Jordan b/c she can’t vote for someone who attended a white supremacist conference and called himself David Duke w/o the baggage. So she is going into the pedophile defender camp.
