As a mathematician . . . I’m somehow rooting for ErdƑ . . .

I do know that the new Pope will take on a new name

I noticed that he grew up in communism’s shadow, which feels very John Paul II ish. So I’m starting to lean toward him as my favorite.

I know that ultimately the Holy Spirit doesn’t make mistakes. But just in case He takes suggestions, I would like someone who is more in the middle, who will focus on teaching the actual faith and not be excessively interested in earthly politics/social issues, who will equally annoy the rad-trad and "progress"ive factions within the faith.

FWIW, I’m not Catholic; so I really don’t have too much at stake with who’s the Pope.

However, I do respect a church leader who does focus more on teaching the Faith and reinforcing how one should live regardless of the political environment. I see too many evangelical types who believe that it’s God Mission to spread their expected behaviors to non-believers by way of (secular) government enforcement.

With all that said, I don’t think it’s wise to have a pontiff who is unskilled in (secular) politics.

Edited to correct some multiple-negatives in my grammar

Sooooo

one can read one of my recent posts on one of the guys who was pope THREE TIMES

to give it away, it was Benedict IX:

He was nephew to two OTHER popes, and he was run out of Rome a few times, resigned the papacy because he wanted to marry his cousin, and some other stuff.

Oh, and he sold the papal office, got himself and the interim pope excommunicated because simony, and there was some other stuff, but then came back with an army, and it’s all very complicated, but then he died around age 40 or so, we’re not sure.

He was the youngest Pope, elected around age 18 or 22 or somewhere in there, his dad bought it for him, wasn’t he a great dad.

Lots of very interesting “history” of the Catholic politics leadership from the 11th century through around 2 centuries after the Protestant Reformation.

Don’t undersell it

It’s -all- interesting

I particularly like the bit in the 19th century, during the formation of the modern version of Italy, where they took the Papal States away from the Pope and he got mad (boooo)
