The traditional color vestments for Priests during lent is Purple (or Violet). Laetare means rejoice and is supposed to be a lighter mood than the rest of Lent so Priest are give the option of wearing Rose (or pink) vestments which are seen as “lighter” version of violet. Traditions can be weird I suppose.
Thanks. This is just so interesting to me.
My very favorite parable. I like to call it the parable of the lost sons & prodigal father.
Okay, they get kind of touchy and say it’s rose, not pink.
As to vestment colors, we have a whole calendar of these.
They wear red, when it’s martyrs’ days. White for saints who weren’t martyrs.
The BVM has her own special vestments.
I got to see gold … and I forget which day that was, but it was very special!
Ordinary time is green.
Lent is purple (except Laetare Sunday which is rose).
Some of the Catholic Church calendars they give you have the color of the vestments for each day.
Official source:
Wow. All we get is to sometimes wear themed ties.
You might be looked at funny, but I’m not aware of any rules against pink vestments…
I used to get these catalogs:
Ok, I lie. I still get their catalogs, like twice a year.
It’s interesting to see what it costs to outfit a priest. Like, one set of vestments isn’t really a lot, but you need a whole bunch for a full year, and then you want more than one green chausible, for instance.
Yeah, ordinary time is forever!
Mark 10:18
It is Holy Week, my dudes.
Have some St. Matthew Passion.
Obviously, Bach wasn’t Catholic. And yes, the above is the WHOLE THING, which is just under 3 hours long.
So if you just want four settings of the Passion Chorale in about 5 minutes:
My favorite music of the Lenten season, and really my favorite religious music of all time. Bach is the best.
I love Bach!
“ahhhhhhhhhhh, Bach”
