Already put the refund in my ROTH.
Filed early last week, refund arrived today!!! ![]()
Got bills to pay, but allocating a bit for Happy Hour at a local wine bar!
Got 5 sets filed last weekend, some easier than others.
Just filed my amended return. I filed too early, got 1099s later. ![]()
My situation is annoyingly complex this year, so I need to give it another review to make sure I feel good.
Iām pretty positive TurboTax got it wrong. I went to FreeTaxUSA, but early on during the year they had the 2025 401k limit wrong, which was just embarrassing but also prevented me from continuing on.
Thanks HR for getting my 401k contributions wrong. Also, Vanguard and Robinhood show backdoor Roth IRA processes differently on their tax forms.
But, we should get nearly $3k back rather than the $9,800 bill from last year.
I logged into TurboTax like always and was offered a deal to have one of their experts file federal and state for $150. Doing it myself would have cost more so I decided to try it. Everything went smoothly. I have worries that they could have screwed something up but I always have some worries that I screwed something up so no real difference there.
I use HR Block, but yes, always afraid I messed it up
If you can prove this, you have recourse for compensation.
But realistically, they screwed up only if you provided bad information (perhaps in response to poor inquiries, but thatās unlikely to matter for compensation)
I set up my own spreadsheet decades ago for estimating my taxes and for running tax planning scenarios. Once it is set up there is little maintenance to update it. That gives me independent reassurance that TurboTax hasnāt missed anything.
I am sure there are now many off the shelf tax tools I could use but there is some satisfaction in developing it and customizing it yourself. As a result, you also understand better the mechanics of the tax scenarios rather than relying on a black box.
Filed today, getting about $950 back on federal, I owe the state about $550. Good deal.
Thanks to Trumponomics and his Big Beautiful Bailout, I was allowed to deduct more things instead of taking the standard deduction. I am getting a chunky check back, a rotund refund, a portly payout if you will.
Time to recheck my withholding amount.
Like what?
(taking notesā¦)
mostly state income and property taxes, which previously had a draconian limit that has been raised.
If I had to guess it would be an increase in the SALT tax deductions under the BBB which increased the cap on deductions from $10K to $40K for years 2025-2029.
Shit. Now I have to go check my exhibits before I start doing thisā¦
[Gilligan joke]No, I donāt use any SALT. But my state and local taxes are a beeyotch.[/Gilligan joke]
Yup, big cap increase. Also, if you happen to get a state refund this year, that will now be taxable for FIT next year.
Filed the Ms and my taxes today.
Nice refund because our high 2024 income (sale of our farm) triggered a higher than warranted clawback of my Old Age Security pension.
