Still could be ChatGPT/other AI. I’m sure a human would still take over, but the typos and such in modern times are intentional in order to filter down to the dumbest of the dumb.
One of the reasons it’s worth putting in some effort to minimize expected refunds. That and the fraud on filing fake returns to collect fake refunds that seems to be a growing problem that will likely only get worse with the cuts at the IRS.
Obviously, some situations will be difficult to manage effectively when life changes happen, but normal year to year stuff should be doable.
Good luck on chasing this down, sounds like a real headache.
I had a problem one year, and after a couple of calls, i got tranferred to an employee who was frighteningly good. It started out inauspiciously “how did you get my number?” “Um i was transferred to you, i don’t know your number. [Explained problem and what earlier repsonses were]”. She then seemed intrigued by the problem, and then started to check thru a number of potential internal issues that were hanging up the process, and came up with what might be (and ended up being without further calls) the solution to the logjam. So there is at least one competent expert there. She may be overworked ![]()
You have to go in to the office. Which they closed.
They have advised me to call, but they don’t answer the phone. I clicked the “how to make an appointment link”, which gives no information on how to make an appointment
Thanks, An_Actuary. I did call my congressperson, and they replied they are unable to help. They suggested I call my tax preparer. I had already done this, and they had said the same thing.

Bump…
Feds and State asking for penalties
I filed for an extension, as I didn’t get my stuff to my tax preparer until mid-March, and he’s a small-time dude who doesn’t really seem that interested in putting in 90-hour weeks for small-time dudes like me who are a little lax on getting him their stuff. We just finalized this week, $3300 refund from Feds and $300 from state. Yay?
Much better than owing that much!
Yep! Had a 6k bill 2 years ago due to it being my first time on contract and not withholding enough.
Yes and no. If you are over a certain dollar amount in covered payroll you have to do catchup as ROTH. That was part of Secure 2.0 and was supposed to go into effect in 2024 but the IRS allowed a 2 year administrative delay.
Today, September 17, six and a half months after I filed my 2024 tax return, my IRS refund appeared in my bank account.
I suspect I would not have received my refund without the efforts of the office of Congressman Greg Steube (R-FL-17) who interceded on my behalf. Thank you Congressman and your staff members.
Apparently I had not used a sufficiently large enough tail factor in estimating how long it would take to receive my refund.
Well at least they paid you interest, amirite?
Yes. Reportable as income of course. I wonder if the IRS promptly sends out Form 1099-INT.
Very pleasant surprise. Forgot about a $1,000 PA estimated tax payment I had made (at a time, early in the filing work this year, when TurboTax was suggesting I was likely to have a penalty for not paying enough. That preliminary PA calc was quite wrong. Net result: just got a refund check, for over $1,000. (I had, in error, paid about $25 when I filed.).
I’m getting a refund, so you best believe I will be filing very soon!!! ![]()
ETA: Daddy got billz 2 pay!! ![]()
Me too but can’t file yet: some of my wife’s tax slips don’t arrive until April and our returns are intertwined.
Federal e-filed; getting a refund. State prepared but not filed. Owe balance. I do my mother’s taxes. Filing required, but no tax due (and no refund) due to high medical expenses. Filed. I also do the simple taxes for a daughter who lives with us. Her federal e-filed with payment scheduled. Her state prepared but not yet filed. Will be mailed same trip to the post office as ours. Tax due and she already paid it online.
I just sent mine in a second time after it was rejected at the end of Feb. The promised turbotax update did not seem to show up on Friday. It seemed like it was just checking boxes yes instead of no (that the home energy improvements were on my own home, etc.). I found out that TT has a forms mode to do this manually, and its been accepted.
I’m getting a decent chunk back from both federal and state. Hopefully that all lands here by the end of the month.
