I love the Rivian trucks. They look great.

The headlights are growing on me, I like the rest of the look quite a lot. I still think Lucid and Porsche are the most stylish EVs out there right now.

I agree. I’d buy a Rivian waay waay waay before I’d buy a Cybertruck

Drove to Columbia, MO and back today, did a little over 350 miles. I forgot to charge it last night and left with a 70% charge, stopped on the ride for ten minutes, and then 14 minutes at the same charger on the way back. I rolled in with 10% charge the second time and discovered it is a v2 charger, I maxed out at 252kW, not bad.

All in, a little less than $30 to go 350 miles, including recharging in the garage now.

Anything to do at the charger?

Also, did you fill at the stops, or just to 50% or 70%?

Wondering what the optimal plan for a trip from LA to Vegas, since there is likely an optimal plan for a given weather.

For 350 miles, mostly flat, that would take me 10 gallons. So $45 (premium). Oh, and zero stops.

Getting an EV for $25k or so seems the optimal decision. Good thing some young EVs with lowish miles are available.

I don’t think that you’ll find an EV that you’ll want for 25k anytime soon.

You’d be surprised.
Nothing new, of course. EVs are depreciating pretty steeply, because reasons.

There was food nearby but I was meeting a friend for lunch. On the way home I went to the convenience store next door and got a drink. Both times I just charged to about 70% or so.

4.5 hours without a stop. Your bladder is stronger than mine. I also need to stretch every 2 or 3 hours because I want to keep using this body into old age.

I thought he was stopping halfway? Drove 175 miles, met a friend for lunch, drove 175 miles back. So maybe a bit over two hours without stopping. That seems pretty doable.

I was replying to dtnf, in reference to driving from la to las vegas, and for him is a 350 miles trip one way.

Ah, ok.

I can go 4.5 hours without peeing. I can also pee every 30 minutes. On road trips I tend to go a pretty long time without peeing. If I had a 350 mile journey I would build in time for a pit stop in my planning. Whether or not I actually take it is a different question.

Yes, there are many things that we could do if we absolutely had to, but if you don’t have to, why do it? There’s only been one time in my life that I can think of where I might need to make a 350 mile road trip (it was actually a 500 mile trip) as fast as possible. It was in my early 20s when we decided to go to a concert in another city. But that was down to poor planning.

When I was driving an ICE car, for a 350 mile trip I would have taken a 5-10 minute break for a stretch and possible bathroom break (which I wouldn’t always need to take). Now with my current EV I would take a 15 minute break to charge for the last 100 miles or so. I could buy an EV which would get me the entire 350 miles without a break but I would still take the break. Added bonus - I can charge up my car at each end without needing to hover over the pump - take 5 seconds to plug it in then walk away.

I mean, as a matter of personal preference I would rather arrive at my destination 10 minutes sooner than make an unnecessary stop.

If my bladder is full and I am uncomfortable then I would not consider that an “unnecessary” stop even though, if my life depended on it, I could go longer without stopping. I’m absolutely NOT going to drive while uncomfortable.

But if I don’t feel the urge to pee or poop or eat, then I’m not going to stop “just because”.

Stopping to stretch and refresh every two or three hours (as recommended by most transport organizations) is not an “unnecessary” stop. The amount of bad driving I’ve seen on long distance trips I think people underestimate how necessary such a stop is.

Sure, and if I was on a 9 hour road trip I’d probably make two stops. A 4.5 hour road trip might be zero stops though. I’m more apt to power through if I’m almost there than if I’m nowhere close.

Depends on how I’m feeling, how familiar I am with what’s in front of me, time of day, what’s happening when I get there, etc.

Good news on the recycle front -

Any mention of costs to do so, or does that not matter?

Like any new technology, costs will come down. Given how expensive it is to mine the material I don’t imagine it would take too long to be profitable (unlike recycling plastic).

Chevy is leading the way in EV affordability for American car manufacturers. If the $7,500 rebate still exists next year, this could be bought for as little $27,495 and has a range of 319 miles. The soon-to-be-released updated Bolt will be even cheaper.
