Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021)

Had a long plane ride this week so finished reading Heretics of Dune during it. Best Dune book yet but any movie version may need to be X-rated!

Chapterhouse: Dune isn’t much better in many aspects WRT an NC17-rating.

If the movies follow the book “exactly”.

Well, NOW I’m interested in these novels.

Thought this might draw DTNF off the sidelines!

The catch is that the books are best read in order and each volume is long. Alternatively, you read detailed synopses of the earlier novels and then plunge into Heretics of Dune.

Um, how about specific page numbers?

About 90% of the way through the book it should get your attention.

I would suggest to read the Butlerian Jihad trilogy before reading the final two books of the story arc.

If nothing else, you’ll get to see how I chose my AO moniker.

I need a break from Sci Fi so that may be a 2025 project. I reread the Foundation series this year as well as the six Dune books which was a lot, given the length of each Dune novel.

Then picking up with the Butlerian Jihad would be a good starting point.

I will follow your advice.

Frank Herbert is such a brilliant writer that I have a mild concern the books written by his son will be disappointing in their quality. Hopefully he has some of his father’s genius in storytelling.

Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson does a decent enough job. The Butlerian Jihad was written based on a set of extensive notes available from Frank.

They started with the Prequel trilogies since that had the most notes to work from and gave them a chance to “figure” some stuff out; and the Butlerian Jihad was a test to see how well they learned for the writing style. I think they did very well in getting a lot of Frank’s style with these.

The last book (which was published as 2) didn’t have nearly as many notes (since a lot of it was “tying up loose ends”) and only the basic outlines and some script. It wasn’t nearly as good as Frank’s material (or the Butlerian Jihad), but at least you’ll get some closure for the (much larger) story arc.

Who else is excited for the new Dune Prophecy series coming out?

I am going to give it a look. Can’t imagine it will be as good as Villeneuve’s movies though.

I watched the first episode last night, without expectations and only a limited knowledge of the Dune universe.

I found it interesting enough that I’ll watch more, but probably not interesting enough to watch each episode as they’re released. Instead, it’ll likely be next in the binging queue after the season is fully out.

I enjoyed it but I like anything related to Dune if it is reasonably well done. It is more enjoyable if you have had an extensive exposure to the Dune books.

just picked up The Dosadi Experiment by Herbert at the Little Library box. Haven’t heard of it, will try it when SciF comes up as my genre
