Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021)

This reviewer seems to have liked Dune: Part Two. Has whetted my appetite even further to get out to see it in a theatre.

Heard rave reviews from a couple of people. I will try to check it out soon.

Entertaining interview with Villeneuve and Chalamet. Hard not to like this pair. Some good insights on Frank Herbert’s intentions.

IIRC, they’re not bad. You get to stay in the universe and learn more about sandworms, psychic powers, and schemes within schemes to overthrow the galaxy. Politics, culture, philosophy, a little action.

The problem is that they’re slower, and less loaded with cool punchy new ideas. Which gives you some time to start thinking maybe it’s not actually that cool and that mindblowing after-all.

There’s still some good scenes and interesting thoughts, but enough pages in-between them that you think you could be doing something else.

Could have put this in “Today I learned”, but I thought it would be better here.

Today I learned that we almost had another Dune movie in the late 70’s. Jodorowsky was the director, and it was going to be an over the top spectacle. 12-14 hour movie length. The Cast included Salvador Dalí, Orson Welles, Gloria Swanson, David Carradine, Mick Jagger,… Dali would play the Emperor, and demanded the highest pay ever at $100k/hour. Music by Pink Floyd and Magma. HR Geiger part of set design.

The extensive work done prepping for the movie influenced subsequent scifi movies including Star Wars, Alien, and the Terminator.

There is a documentary about this attempt. I might have to check it out.

seen it

Saw it this afternoon and enjoyed it. There has to be a Dune Messiah movie.

Except I think it’ll be called “Dune 3” and just tie up the loose ends of Herbert’s original story arc.

Children of Dune starts the larger story arc of the Dune universe (and ties back to why the Butlerian Jihad was fought in the first place). Nothing in the current two movies show any form of “interest” in pursuing this larger story line.

I also expect it will be called Dune Part 3 rather than Dune Messiah. Unfortunately it will be a few years away from showing up in cinemas.

Noticed that Dune 2 is now streaming on Max, and finally saw it.

Enjoyed it too. I probably ought to read the books sometime.

Just watched Dune part 2. Of the 3 Dune movies I’ve seen, it was by far the best

i preferred Part 1, though i would have to rewatch to remember why

For me, Part 1 holds much closer to the book but structured in such a way as to make things easier to grasp for those who haven’t read the book.

Part 2 deviates quite a bit from the book, but in such a fashion that I think it still captures the heart of Frank’s storyline, but more relevant to the audience of 2024 (than the audience of 1963).

I agree with your points on faithfulness to the books.

I thought Part 2 in the film was a much darker take than the books on Paul being the “Messiah”. I enjoyed that twist. Note: I’ve read Dune more than once, but it’s been at least 20 years since my last reading.

How many times have you read Dune Messiah? I would say that Part 2 captured what’s presented in this book rather well along with the incorporation of the 2024 movie audience vs. the 1966 Sci-Fi audience

I only read Dune Messiah and Children of Dune once in high school. Didn’t find them as compelling as the original

Just finished Dune Messiah. Very different from Dune

Frank was going for a very long, large story arc that starts with Children of Dune. God Emperor of Dune continues that set up for the story arc, but the last two I found were far more interesting (getting back to the “thrill” that is Dune). The more so since much in Frank’s last two books draws heavily on God Emperor (and God Emperor draws heavily on Children).

I will say that I think you’ll find the prequel Trilogy (House Atreides, House Harkonnen, House Corrino) to be just as interesting as Dune, however.

Some day, I’ll get back around to reading the additional “side” origin stories of the Mentats, Bene Gesserits, Spacing Guild, etc.

Have continued with reading the Dune books. Children of Dune was great and would make a good movie. God Emperor of Dune was awesome for the musings but would be difficult to make into an “action movie”.

Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse: Dune are now loaded on my Kobo. I expect I will stop after reading the six core books. They do require much time.
