Democrats Say the Darndest Things!

I have been pleasantly surprised at most Democrats either supporting his removal or being generally ambivalent.

I mean, innocent till guilty and all sure. And if the case seemed spurious then yes, wait for the courts. But even if he is found innocent this looks bad enough that he should go.

Surely we can dig up a number of Democratic politicians and citizens supporting him but it feels like not a whole lot of them do. Not that I think Democrats are free of corruption, but it’s not “Blue No Matter Who”.

I think people argue innocence until proven guilty much more broadly than they should, much like claiming free speech in places where it doesn’t apply. People shouldn’t be imprisoned or have their rights taken away without due process, but being a Senator isn’t a right, it is a privilege, and I am ok with people losing privileges without due process. A perhaps overly extreme example is Bill Cosby – his conviction has been overturned, so he shouldn’t be in prison. But I am more than ok with society thinking that he is a rapist and shunning him accordingly.

Or for a more current, less extreme example, Russell Brand hasn’t been convicted and so we should legally presume him innocent. But if his story is true, then he verbally abused dozens of sex workers that he hired, and had consensual sex with 16 year old school girls while he was a famous celebrity in his 30s and I’m ok with that being career ending.

Even if someone turned out to be falsely accused and their career was in tatters, they could likely win a libel case. Not ideal but it does discourage false accusations. Geoffrey Rush won a case against an accuser, but his career is pretty much over -

I don’t understand why this is a problem…

Well, yeah, of course.

I read an article about how the consensual 16 yo wasn’t illegal in UK, and that allegations were leading to discussions about whether laws should be changed. Whether it should be career ending due to ick factor is a separate question.

Alright, well, English birds are more mature than in CA or NY. Most of the US states have a similar ages of consent, unless the map I have as a Favorite, er, I mean, I just looked up is outdated.
Age of Consent Laws By Country.

Menendez says the cash found in his home was from his ‘personal savings account’ which he kept for ‘emergencies’ due to his family ‘facing confiscation in Cuba’

I guess he assumes bribes are cleansed if you use your savings account as a conduit.

From where do you withdraw the bars of gold?

See, as a Democrat he doesn’t know how to lie properly. He shouldn’t have even acknowledged the cash. The DOJ is out to get him. It was a plant. He can’t be charged with anything because he’s running for office.

Come on, doesn’t everyone have gold bars lying around in case everything goes to hell?

Guy wearing the hoodie has more integrity than anyone wearing a suit in either house of Congress.

I love Fetterman and how much the right hates him. It’s excellent watching them yell about wearing a T-shirt while their own Congresspeople traffic minors across state lines and they look away.

i like how he brought back the term “jagoffs”. being 6’8’’ & 300lbs likely means he doesn’t easily get intimidated by criticism of stuff that doesn’t matter a ton.

I’m betting a lot of it comes from the fact that he looks like he could be one of them (or they wish they could look like him). So manly.

Bob Menendez says he’s been charged because he’s a ‘Latino American’:

He’s playing the latino card instead.

Current score: 13 Democratic Senators have called on Menendez to resign, he is going to be primaried at the very least. 0 Republican Senators have called on Menendez to resign.

Why? To be (eventually) called a hypocrite?

It’s easier to play whataboutism if there’s someone convenient to point at.

That seems to be giving them a lot of credit for even thinking that ethics should be a consideration.

Although I suppose they could have just called for him to resign simply because he’s not Republican.

I’m sure if he was in a state where there was a chance the replacement might be a Republican they’d be calling for his expulsions.
