So are they doing a good job or a bad job? If a bad job, what should they be doing differently?

If your goal is the simple one-sided “how many people are caught illegally crossing the border” then 2 million seems like a big number. Go ahead and give yourself a big pat on the back.
If your goal is “secure the border” - then the Biden Administration is a raging failure.

Oh Republicans in the Trump admin did so many shady things for profit you can take your pick of where to put the profit tag. Miss use of scam donations, no bid contacts for sort of building a wall that falls down, companies with zero experience but good connections making bank for housing immigrants in substandard conditions. What if we catch 100% of everyone crossing illegally, and process them in a timely and orderly manner? Would the border be secure?
What percent can slip through for the border to not be secure?

If the Biden administration suddenly captured 50% as many people next month as they did this month, is the border more or less secure than it was previously?

Maybe because millions of people aren’t illegally crossing it every year and getting caught while many more aren’t caught. Maybe because large quantities of Fentanyl and other illegal narcotics killing hundreds of thousand of your fellow country-men aren’t being smuggled across the border. Maybe because human traffickers aren’t bringing women and young girls across the border in order to subject them to a life of prostitution here. Maybe because VP Harris was made the border czar for the southern border but Biden ignored the northern border. I dunno. Maybe those are some of the reasons. I sure we can find more.
