Daily Brain Puzzlers Calendar

I’m stuck on those two and 3 down and 7 up as well. Assuming I got the other ones right…

Summary

OK. After looking at the dictionary

piano
grope
stile
sum
wok

wig
roars
knots
opium
elm

3/22

Never heard of Stile. I had Opioid (spelled it wrong apparently - Opiod) instead of Opium, which was making 4 down (Sum) hard.

Probably wouldn’t have guessed elm. Why is it a slippery tree?

Summary

There is a type of elm called slippery elm.

Summary

It’s a particular species of elm. " the common name “slippery elm” alludes to the mucilaginous inner bark."

Yeah, wasn’t ever going to get that.

Please keep it actuarial. IFYP

I like these puzzles. This one was a bit easy.

This one’s a little different.

3/23/2021 - MYSTERY NUMBER
Find a six-digit number in which the second and fifth digits are the same, the third digit is three times the second, the fourth digit is double the first digit, the sixth digit is the sum of the first two digits, and the sum of all the digits is 34.

Had to use some trial and error.

Summary

439837

Yeah, the official answer has trial and error. I find that slightly annoying, but there were only so many options to try.

Agreed, having solved some skyscraper sudoku made it nice and logical.

As for the lion one:

Summary

I recently rewatched The Wizard of Oz Scrubs episode (My Way Home), so I just guessed the middle and was glad to see it fit with the cross clues.

I didn’t exactly have to use trial and error

Summary

B = E
C = 3B
D = 2A
F = A + B
and sum = 34

B has to be 1, 2, or 3
A has to be 1, 2, 3, or 4
and these came in useful

substituting into the sum equation gave me
4A + 6B =34

Just looking at this equation, you can see we’ll need A and B as big as possible to get to the 34. Those ones and twos are obviously not gonna be anywhere near big enough.

You can call that trial and error, I suppose, but it seemed clear to me that the one to try was the max values of A and B, and that was the answer.

Summary

Also, even if I’d guessed, I’d only have to try 3 values - 1, 2, and 3 for B

This is similar to how I did it,

but once I got down to A<5, B<4 it was obvious to me that if B=1, then A>4, so that was not possible. If B=2, A was not a whole number, so it had to be B=3, thus A=4

Not sure if that counts as “trial and error” or not.

This is going to be the only one for today.

Find rhymes for the words in each quartet so that the first word becomes a category and the second, third, and fourth words become specific items in that category. For example, TOWER: lazy, faster, knows → FLOWER: daisy, aster, rose.

  1. SKI: leader, poke, meek
  2. DANDY: delis, coffee, budge
  3. CHAIN: gnarly, feet, nice
  4. FORT: solo, gosh, rocky
Summary

!!!

Tree Cedar Oak Teak
Candy Jellies Toffee Fudge
Grain Barley Wheat Rice
Sport Polo Squash Hockey

The first one was tough.

On the fourth, I’d argue the second rhyme is not a true rhyme. I couldn’t come up with it, so maybe I’m just bitter.

agree on both counts, but couldn’t come up with anything better for the last one - the rest was easy
