Crazy weather thread

What a difference a day makes. Utah mountains, bottom is yesterday, top is today.

Does that drain to the Colorado River?

No, those are the mountains just to the east of SLC, they drain to the Great Salt Lake.

Bummer.
Saw a la Nina map, showing more showers north of the Colorado River drainage.
Sierras going to be low snow season

This specific place is in the Great Salt Lake drainage. But this system was moving from south to north and I expect that it will go over Wyoming and hopefully drop some on there that will drain to the Colorado.

Just need to prep for next summer.
And the summer after that.

Today I learned that the Great Basin is an endorheic watershed, meaning it doesn’t drain to any ocean.

Great minds think alike! Saw this article on endorheic lakes. Would love to tag the top 8. Lake Eyre only appears every 50 years or so though -

A huge area of the country has not seen a drop of rain yet this month. The rough size of the area: Start in MIN, go east to MA, go south to GA, then West to TX, then back up to MN. That whole shape had no rain.

So weird to see California NOT in extreme drought. We were dry for about 20 years until recently.

Florida’s looking real good. I wonder how they got so lucky.

I was wondering just how they define “drought” for this map. Here is what they say:

Drought categories show experts’ assessments of conditions related to dryness and drought including observations of how much water is available in streams, lakes, and soils compared to usual for the same time of year.

So the fact that we are going into the winter time and haven’t had much precip in the very recent past probably makes a lot of difference. Another map on their website showed the near term precip forcast (next week) and the majority of the US was between slightly above to above normal. So in a couple weeks that map could change a bit.

They’re really good at TAKING the water, but not so good at KEEPING the water.

The pictures of flooding in the Spanish region of Valencia are unbelievable. There are at least 95 dead, with lots more missing
