Copa America 2024

A bit physical but that was an exciting first half in the BRA-COL match.

And we are getting a side-by-side comparison of how good “automated offside position technology” is. Much quicker in determining offside positions, still need some human component for the “actively involved in play” portion.

Not sure why BRA is ok playing URU instead of PAN.

This is definitely not Brazil of old. At times, it looks like a more skilled version of the USMNT but with all of the tactical ineptness and the same flair for playing tentative defense for long stretches.

Well, it is one version of the Brazil of old. By not winning the last World Cup, they equalled their record of going 5 world cups in a row without winning (1930-1954 and 1974-1990). Dare they go for a sixth?

Colombia should annihilate Panama.

All former parts of Gran Colombia (Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela) have progressed.

No extra time in the knockout rounds, with the potential exception of the final

Interesting!

Very interesting..

No cake walk, as thst was a crazy finish for a heavy favorite with crowd support. That was fun!

54th minute: jackass announcer thinks FIFA makes the LOTG.

Later, I agree with him that the referee should look at the screen and make that not-offside decision on ECU’s goal, which was obvious.

We will soon be down to four South American teams in the Copa competition. Wouldn’t be surprised if Uruguay ends up winning in the end.

My son’s 3rd / 4th grade soccer league had that rule, including for the final, and I thought it was dumb there, can’t imagine it for a serious competition.

But it was vaguely explainable for 3rd/4th grade kids. This is more like the 1st FIFA World Championship for Women’s Football for the M&M’s Cup 1991 Women’s World Cup, where matches were only 80 minutes long and extra time was only 20 minutes because women are weaker than men, they probably can’t play an entire 90 minutes, we need to cut match lengths down for them so they’ll hold up. [And then have then play potentially 6 games in 13 or 14 days, 15 if you’re China and make it to the title game.]

Canada v Venezuela

Summary

It’s good that the Canadian goal keeper won’t be embarrassed for the rest of his life now

The Canada-Venezuela match occurred while I was on the plane between Toronto and Vancouver last night so I saw none of it. Will try to catch highlights today.

Spoiler:

Even worse than I expected.
