Indigenous is the most inclusive term currently used in Canada covering First Nations, Inuit and Métis groups. Aboriginal has fallen out of fashion and, of course, Indian and Eskimo are viewed as pejorative.

Yes we commandeered the name in 1776 when we changed our name from the United Colonies to the United States of America. That gave us the inside track on being called Americans. Canada had been called British North America in the past but thought of itself more as British than American.
