Columbus day

Indigenous is the most inclusive term currently used in Canada covering First Nations, Inuit and Métis groups. Aboriginal has fallen out of fashion and, of course, Indian and Eskimo are viewed as pejorative.

Adam & Eve lived before the land divided. They were the original Native Americans

THAT’s the one you laugh at?
How about “Pre-Columbian-Americans”?
Pretty friggin’ exact, and excludes those not of heritages in America before Columbus arrived.

200 million years ago?
TIL.

5783 years ago

“Italian Heritage/Indigenous People’s Day”.

+1 this is crazy shit.

Let’s rename Hitler’s birthday to be German Pride/Jewish Pride day.

Then everybody is happy.

Mulan is older than Eve

Maybe call it discovery day?

I mean, sure technically it was discovered twice, but you could argue “Columbus” and similar dudes were special for being the start of permanent 2 way travel between the continents.

Or maybe just call it “boat day”?
And we could celebrate how boats are cool.

The US has largely commandeered the word “American” for its own citizens but everyone born in North or South America could otherwise call themselves “Americans”.

Maybe call it “any other day”

How are you going to shame me for laughing at your joke!?

huh?? In what context Mulan is around 1000 years ago?

I believe King David is this oldest biblical person that could be verified archeologically.
3000 years ago

“American” is short for “united states of america”. The other countries don’t have “american” in the country’s name for it to make sense.

what do you mean? Mulan is like before Confucian times. And Confucius is older than Jesus.

in the last N years (as far as i can recall) it functioned as IA pride day and had little to no focus on columbus and his exploits. Much like how irish americans don’t really do much to focus on st patrick himself on 3/17. it’s a heritage day whatever the name. unfortunately for the Italian Americans, the name glued to their day has fallen in the ratings.

agree on Confucius being older than Jesus.
I don’t believe Mulan was
In what context would any version of Eve be younger than that?

fair enough. keep it then, but just like st patricks day isn’t a federal holiday, neither should italian pride day.

Yes we commandeered the name in 1776 when we changed our name from the United Colonies to the United States of America. That gave us the inside track on being called Americans. Canada had been called British North America in the past but thought of itself more as British than American.
